Experiment results--crimping factory ammo

Did the same once.

A couple years ago, I did the same thing with Winchester White Box and a 1911 (Colt Series 80). The data is buried around here somewhere. What I do remember is that the factory (ten) rounds that got the Lee FCD treatment had a lower Standard Deviation. So it would seem that it improved their performance consistency. I didn't check for accuracy because every round that goes though that gun ends up right where I point it.

I just ran the test for fun and I doubt if my methods were scientifically compliant.
 
Factory ammo is crimped, otherwise it wouldn't case gage. The powder drop station bells the case mouth to accept the bullet, and then the crimp (de-belling) station puts a very slight taper on the case. Try skipping the crimp station on your press and then you'll see it won't load (semi auto). The only difference between home grown reloads and factory is the factory uses brand new brass and loads on commercial machines, that's all. Course if I could afford a Camdex loader at $35,000 I would buy new ammo.....
