experiences with 458 Lott

Just for fun recently did some sandbag penetration tests. The AR in 556 and the AK in 762x39 and the AR10 in 308 would not shoot through one sandbag laid sideways...My 458 Winchester Magnum bolt action rifle with 500 grain steel jacketed solids shot through two sandbags,,,one laid sideways and one laid lengthwise.

Granted the 556 and 762x39 and 308 would have performed better with steel jacketed solids but after shooting the 458 they all seemed rather wimpy.

I believe you can shoot either 458 Win Mag or 458 Lott in the 458 Lott and the Ruger Number One is a great rifle, should be fun.

micksis86, no worries it was fired into a pulled stump from a local logging operation.
It still amazed me that it was capable of doing that. The Barnes X-Bullet is also very effective in this caliber.

Got an email today about a USFS timber sale in Carolina, some logs had been filled with bullets from target shooters, the sawmill shut down for safety and the logs identified and separated out. Cost to the taxpayer to make the logger and the sawmill whole due to the sale of defective timber : several thousands of dollars. Hope Bubba likes working all year to pay the taxes for his afternoon of fun. When we catch folks in the act, it's citations and timber value restitution.

Saw a 24" Big Leaf Maple last year, beautiful music wood, just about ruined by a .222 Remington shooter, took him a couple of years to do it, shot from his property to the tree across the boundary, but he must have put 500 rounds in that tree.

I finally pulled the trigger on my Remington 700 / .375 RUM.
Yeah, wasn't prepared for that type of recoil.
Harsh and fast, but, I LIKED IT! :D

I was looking into getting a RUGER No.1 in .458 LOTT, stainless / laminated.
What I wanted was a rifle in that configuration JUST TO SHOOT IT once in a while.
Never got it; not sure I ever will.
But it was an intriguing idea.

That's a LOTT of power! ;)

Bullets in a tree ? No problem ! How about a 1" dia nut and bolt , or a 10" mill file . BTDT ! Anyway that's why they use metal detectors it saves saws.
