Exile on an Island: What guns?

9mm on a bear infested island? I only need 1 bullet, for me, cause that's the only thing that wussy 9 will stop! :D

(awaits the onslaught of pop-gun fanatics)

I thought I'd seen it all, until a 22WMR spun a bunny 2 1/4 times in the air!

I'd have to say a good large machete and a blackpowder rifle (flintlock preferably). You can make your own powder, bullets, etc. Plus there is no need for percussion caps. A blackpowder rifle can take anything from large game to small, and if you miss you can run and have the machete as backup. Plus if you need a bow, they're easy enough to make from the land and from animals that you might kill.

Basics: air, shelter, water, food, fire, tools.

Air no problem.

Shelter: North face shell gear, Mossy oak Bug mesh clothing (for tropics or to camo the north face stuff). Couple of tarps. Lots of cordage. Lots of clear 3 to 5 mil plastic sheets (for solar stills, drying food etc).
Other basic clothing.

Water: They make a water purifier that makes seawater drinkable (two of those); solar still equipment, Canteens and water jugs.

Food: Lifeboat rations for emergencies (they are not real tasty so you won't eat them unless you really need them), some food plant seeds.

Fire: several sparking tools and couple of water proof containers to hold char cloth

Tools: Shovel, spade, axe, pick, leatherman, wood chisel, files (wood and metal), hachet/tomahawk, E tool, Cold Steel Trail master, wheelbarrow, Mt. bike, tool kits for bike and guns. Books on pottery making, Tom Brown's books, Field guides on plants and animals and sea critters, manuals for weapons, medical. Several traps. Snares.

Tools: guns: T/C contender carbine with 44 mag and 22 RF barrels and scopes. S&W 629 with 4" brrl. A pair of S&W 317 kit guns. Slingshot. Compound bow. Ruger No 1 in 45-70. And about 10 or so H&R/NEF 12 gauge shotguns--trip wire guns etc. No repeating long arms to force economy. Lots of ammo.

Food would be mainly from animal and fish traps. And gathering/horticulture of plants.

If I am alone on a bear island I would wipe them out in very unsportsman like manner (traps, pits, etc). Because they could easily destroy your margin for survival by just breaking things.

Hawaii. No snakes. Speaking of Hawaii...if I'm going to get dropped on an island, lets make it that one ;)
