Exile on an Island: What guns?

Your going to be stuck on an Island, alone as far as you know.

It may be Kodiak island, it might be someplace along the equator.

It is exile (for owning guns perhaps?) you won't be able to touch your guns and gear until they dump you on the shore. They won't allow boats. Inner tubes and life vests are okay so you can fish if you want.

What gear will you pick for the rest of your life? Blackpowder? Bows? What books?

They may dump other outcasts on your island (for all you know they are dumping gang bangers and filming the whole event for entertainment)

I will post some of my ideas later...if anyone responds to this thread...so I don't influence selection.

There can be only one!

Hmmmmm ... you could fill a few screens with this, but ... essentials only, then ...

Shotgun: Pump, stainless steel with synthetic stock (salt protection); 8-shot extension tube; short-barrelled.

Ammo: From No. 7 through to solids (pref. Brenneke slugs)

Handgun: Wheelgun, also stainless steel; .357 magnum with red dot sight

Ammo: Full-house JHP

Rifle: No idea of brands (but lean towards Ruger stainless w/synthetic stock), but I'd want something indestructible in .308 with a good 6-20x40 variable scope (probably Leupold or B&L)

Ammo: Mix of weights from 125gr to 180gr; soft nose and JHP

Bow: Compound approx 70lb draw weight, say PSE or Simmons; full bowfishing attachments; string peep sight and pin and wire sight (adjustable); armguard and release (yeah, I'm a wuss -- been whacked too many times!!)

Arrows: Easton 2315s at 30"; generic fibreflass fishing shafts; mixed broadheads (possibly Ribtek), fishing heads, clouts; plastic parabolic vanes and frou-frou

Fishing: a casting rod of about 8', with an Alvey 5" casting reel and min. 20lb breaking strain line; assorted hooks and tackle

Plus:
tomahawk
decent machete
metal file(s)
oil/water dispersant
drop-point skinner -- quality
Bowie or Tanto style for protection
water purification tablets
a whole heap of disposable cigarette lighters (and a few dozen cartons of Marlboro to go with them ;))
good scotch (medicinal purposes only!!)
first aid kit (waterproof; floatable)
every book Stephen King has written
SAS Survival Book
a few rolls of decent nylon rope (from 1/4" through to 1")
trangia
a Bible (about time I reread it)
a "space blanket"
some pencils and a ream of photocopy paper

I'm excluding clothes because I assume you'd be allowed clothing appropriate to the location, BUT I want a pair of army GP boots (with spare laces).

Look, I'd be dead in a week anyway -- but at least with a smoke and a scotch I'd go out smiling .... ;)

B

Spear heads, and spear shafts from proprietary compound.

Cases of protein powder.
Vitamins.
Books of poetry (in English, Japanese, German, French, and Spanish).
Medical texts, in English and Latin.
Medical supplies.
Water filters.
Writing materials.
Battlefield classics (Sun Tsu, Musashi, etc).
Semtex, related starter material.
A good knife.

...and you, so I could kick your @ss for the next 50 years, for landing us here! ;)

Interesting you ask this question now because on May 31, CBS will begin airing the "Survivor" series, where 9 people I think it is were thrown onto this deserted island and survive off the land, voting the dead weight off one by one. Doubt the network let 'em use guns, but not sure. In any event, watching the show will probably be interesting in that it might become apparent which firearms would have helped the most in getting game, etc.

Spectre, that might not be the wisest thing to do if we were stuck on the same island. :D My BA is in Anthropology and I study more than a couple primitive survival skills. I also read every real life acount I can get my little paws on about people who have lived on islands by choice or otherwise like that.

Kodiak Island would be interesting and far harder than most other islands IMO. Most islands don't really call for a rifle.

A good .22 rifle and bricks and bricks of ammo.

Ruger mod. 7, in 30.06, with a reasonable ammount of ammo.

Any one of the quality pump shotguns out on the mkt., reasonable ammount of ammo.

K-Bar, Machette, Flint and Steel, Fishing line and lures, hooks etc..., Axe, Hammer, Maul, Cordage (nylon), nails, Boonie hats, Utility uniforms (thats BDUs for you non jarhead types), GP tent

Survival medicine book, Edible plant guide, Bible and Exhaustive Concordance, Water proof bags, my family (if allowed),

Did I mention bricks and bricks of .22 ammo?

When do we go?

16" Naval rifle from the Missouri. And enough sacks of powder to fire a shot over the bow of anything on the horizon.

And......Ginger and Mary Ann

Wow, Glamdring, you sure do enjoy these "what if" threads. ;)

Since you didn't set a limit to the weight, I want a nice house, full of food, water, guns, ammo, a satelite dish, internet connection, air conditioning, a generator, a spare generator, and tons of gas to run it all. :D

Seriously, my 870, lots of assorted ammo. My .22 pistol. A good tent, a good sleeping bag, a good fire starter. A compound bow w/lots of arrows, fishing attachments. Hooks, lines. A couple of good knives, a hatchet, and a water purifier.

You guys can keep Ginger and Mary Ann, I'll take my wife, I bet she could out shoot both of them!

I thought I'd seen it all, until a 22WMR spun a bunny 2 1/4 times in the air!

Any island has to have Mary Ann.

Give me my Brno .22, either my M1 Garand or my DWM 7X57, my 686, a few hundred rounds of the centerfire, with a few shotshells for the .357, and brick upon brick of .22.

As for the more mundane stuff, how about simply inviting the Professor? Bring Ginger just to keep things balanced, though.

Yep :D Least I don't start threads about what to use for bears :) :p

No offense Bruce, but unless that red-dot sight has a solar panel on top; it will be useless in a couple weeks.

Okay, off the top of my head:

Tetanus toxoid;
Epinephrine;
Diphenhydramine;
Morphine;
a bunch of other medications;
A basic surgical kit including ortho tools;
All of my med. texts;
A 10/22;
A two hundred POUNDS of .22LR ammo;
An 870;
Many cases of #6;
A S&W M66;
lots of brass, a lee loader, etc.
A couple cases of slugs;
A slingshot;
A Fresnel lens;
A flexible mirror;
A zippo, a hundred flints, a bunch of wick, ten gallons of white gas;
cannon fuse;
lots of black powder;
lots of threaded pipe and caps;
100' of 1/8" steel cable;
100' of 3/8" nylon rope;
1000' of nylon kite string (the really strong stuff);
A whetstone;
A couple Kaybar's;
knee high kevlar lined boots (I haven't heard of an island without snakes);
A double-bit axe;
A hatchet;

My dad was stationed on Kodiak island in the 50's doing work for the fish & wildlife service...

He had a Ruger MKII 22lr with him
