Brandishing? No. It didn't come out of the holster. And as far as threatened? Oh yeah. What was I going to do? He'd been following me for about 20 minutes maintaining about a 40 foot distance regardless of what I did, where I went, or how fast I was going. A couple other things I didn't mention that are relevant to my chosen course of action:

1. This was before I had a cell phone.
2. I had had major knee surgery recently so running was out.

So let's see here:
A guy out alone late at night walking with a noticeable limp. No witnesses around. I've been casing him now for about 20 minutes. Do I make my move? OOPS. Nope. Nevermind.

I never said anything, or did anything other than grasp the gun and stand my ground. Now it's his choice. Does he rush me hoping it's not really a gun? Or does he just walk away, acting like he was just out for a walk himself?

There was NO REASON for him to follow me like he did unless he was an idiot thinking he was funny, or a slimebag up to no good against a crippled victim.

Had he tried slowly closing the gap? I would have challenged him verbally before any physical action on my part. Had he rushed me? Glad I didn't have to find out.

It sounded like brandishing when you said that you pushed your shirt back. And how was he chasing you for like 20mins if he kept a 40 foot distance? Also if this lasted for 20mins why didn't you try to get to a safe place?

I live in california so CCW is a big no no for average law-abiding folks, and I had to pull my knife quite a few times to ward off suspicious inner city types.

The only time I have carried was when I was living in Alaska, I carried my little TOmcat on me wherever I went and never had to use it. FOlks there seemed to be more business-minding and give you more space.

Since I've had a CCW, never had to........but way before, I would have brought it out on two different times, once, a friend and I (about 16 at the time) were jumped by five older and bigger males. We lost the fight, but did enjoy (?) the time spent with the police cruising bars and hangouts looking for them. Later the mug shot books and the line-up. However, never caught them. Only time I ever made the front page of the local paper, though my name was withheld due to age.

The other time, I was in college, on a party trip to New Orleans. We were on our way to the French Quarter, at night, where I was stopped at a stop light, one car in front of me. A car loaded with blacks pulled up and stopped beside me, not going all the way to the light, driver side. One of them said something to us, which I ignored, but then suddenly a very drunk female back seat passenger decided to yell a racial slur at them, she was also on the drivers side, but sitting in the middle next to her boyfriend,......within seconds 4 doors opened on that car and out piled at least six (looked like a hundred) bodies unloaded ready for a fight. The next thing I knew the drivers side back door was opened by them and one of them grabbed the drunk trying to drag her out of the car. At the same time my door was opened and one of them tried to kick me, but only managed to hit the seat on several attempts, which gave me time to swing around so that I got a lucky kick to his mid section, pushing him back. I then grabbed and slammed my door shut, locked it, and turned to give the intruder in the back seat a blow across his face which drove him back out the car. While this was taking place the car in front of me at the light moved forward, which gave me space to escape by switching lanes. I ran the light and the next thing I knew I was doing about 80 MPH down a one way street the wrong way, lucky there was no traffic. My date was screaming hysterically at the drunk girl in the back seat, whose boyfriend did nothing but laugh during the entire episode.:(

As I think about the incident, I'm not sure a gun would have helped or made things worse when I was outmanned, and possible out gunned...anyway, it was my last double date with that girl.

By the way, I married my date and we've lived happily ever after:cool: .............................ck

RevolverLover: Casing, not cHasing. As far as the shirt back thing, it wasn't a sweep it back to draw like you see in the movies. Just a brushed aside so I could grip the weapon kinda thing. I didn't go into an agressive stance or anything like that. For all he knew I just put my hand in my front pocket.

Given the lighting, and the way we were posistioned, he couldn't have even been able to tell what I had my hand on, if anything. I was just letting him know that he was done following me. Whatever direction he wanted to go, I would happily take another. A little food for thought on whether he wanted to pursue this course of action.

As a matter of fact my next move, had he spoken rather than just walked off would have been along the lines of "Excuse me, but you've followed me around for a bit now. This is making me nervous. Would you please tell me what direction you're heading, so that I may go a different one?" Not the "Dude, you keep following me and I'll blow you away!" approach.

If you're calling me out for doing something stupid, we can go PM. If you're asking for more details and better understanding of the situation, keep asking questions, and I'll keep answering them.

But I won't degenerate this thread into a wizzing match. And I won't be armchair quarterbacked.

How is degenerating into a wizzing match? I was simplying asking questions to get a better understanding of the situation because the way you said "pushed my shirt back" in your first post made it seem like you branished your weapon for this guy to back off thats all. If you think that i'm simply asking these questions to attack you in some way then you are mistaken and I apologize for it sounding like that.

No. We're good. Glad you're not getting upset. Just seemed like you had singled me out. After reading my own post I can see where the "Draw pilgrim!" picture might have come to mind.

In fact, sorry I was a little terse in my post. No excuse other than I've cranked about 70 hours on the clock at work this week(due to a lot of folks being on vacation). Made me a little crabby I see. I'll have to watch that.

The thing is this:

By the time the above posted stuff happened I had litterally walked all the way around 2 different blocks and several other directions as well with him following me. I changed directions at random a few times, crossed the street a couple times. This way even if for some reason he needed to go up the same block I was, there was no logical reason for him to follow me across the street in the middle of the block and the around the next three right hand corners in a row. Keeping a certain distance? I slow down, you slow down just enough to maintain that distance? He wouldn't pass me, wouldn't let me increase the distance between us?

We had made eye contact several times as well. With this all going on, there was no way in hell I was going to walk him right to my house. What good would that have done? Now he knows where I live, and I'm going to busy my hands and eyes trying to open an ulocked door instead of watching him? Uh-uh, no way I'm doing that. I couldn't run, and had no cell phone. At that point in time my town had only ONE policeman on duty that time of night anyway.

So I just turned around, brushed my shirt back eough to put my hand on the grip of my sp101 which was riding in my front pocket, and made direct eye contact. Not a scowl or menacing glance, just direct eye contact. No intimidating body posture either. Next move was up to him.

Anything you would have done different?

Trust me, I'm not geting upset. I work for the CYA (now known as the DJJ) so I know about cranking in alot of hours and getting crabby. :D Sorry again if it seemed like I singled you. The only thing that matters is that situation didn't get violent and you made it home saftey. Be safe.

The way he was following you then he was up to no good. I know it would of been difficult for you to flee if the situation changed, I know I have had two knee surgery's so I know what its like. I would of been keeping an eye on him the whole time while trying to get to some place public. For instance, the police station, firestation, etc. That's probably the only thing I would of done different.

How small a town do you live in?

Its not legal to carry where Im from. Getting a CCW permit is nearly impossible to obtain.

However, there have been many situations in which a pistol might have helped or made me feel more secure.

1. I accidentally cut a guy off in traffic. All of a sudden he started following me on the highway. So I simply slowed down to let him get ahead. This was a 55 mph highway. He slowed down to. It got to the point where we stopped on this highway with all the cars blaring their horns. It was absolutely dangerous, but I wasnt going to let anyone follow me. He eventually got ahead of me where I let him get far ahead. He eventually went into a gas station and didnt see him after that.

2. Looking for a parking spot in NYC. I was waiting for a guy to pull out and he got pissed at me for waiting. He started to get out of his car so I drove off. He then commenced to pursue me at high speed. There was a red light and I stopped. He got out of his car and almost walked up to the drivers side. I decided to just blow through the red and make a fast turn onto another street.

3. I was trying to find parking again, different day. There were two guys at least 200 lbs a piece in another car. I found a spot and then these guys pulled up to my car and started looking at me in a hostile way. They waited there for a minute or two and I had a feeling that their intentions were not friendly. I had my hand on my cell phone with it predialed to 911 just in case. They finally pulled off

4. This happened a long time ago, years ago. I was driving through Georgia and there was a car that had been behind me for a while. I knew he was following me. I was in a 5.0 liter Mustang and it was a fast car. I sped up and he would match my speed. So I saw a rest area and pulled off to see if he would just go on down the road, but then he pulled off into the rest area with me. I pretended to go for parking and then I saw him parking a ways away as well. I then decided to quickly take advantage of this and go for the exit to the rest area flooring it the entire way. I looked in the mirror and saw his headlights exit the rest area. I knew then that it was either violate speed law or get into a bad situation, so I had that Mustang up to 120-130. His car wasnt as capable and I didnt slow down until his headlights were gone for a good while.

5. My brother and I were in his pickup. We stopped at a light and a bunch of guys got out of the truck and started aggressively approaching our vehicle. Fortunately the light turned green and it was a scary situation. He pulled away and we managed to lose them quickly.

6. My friend and I crossed a street. A porsche comes screeching by and almost hits us. We yell "hey". Porsche stops and two big guys step out with aggressive intentions. Fortunately, a nearby store owner intervenes in the situation telling everyone to break it up or they would call the police.

So in all of the situations, you can easily see how each could have gotten out of hand. Being unarmed against an individual with unknown intentions is very scary. If I had at the very least, a small revolver, then I would have felt more secure in the event things escalated to a certain point.

Sounds like NJ needs to stop driving completely. Seems every single one of his listed incidents occured with him behind the wheel.

This thread is depressing. No CCW in California, at least not here in the major cities. I don't understand how in granola Washington will let anyone carry and they barely even want you to own one out here. Sigh.

Yeah, that's one good thing about WA. Not seeing the sun for weeks at a time is a bad thing about WA. Remember that it's 2 different states politically and climate wise. The Seattle - Tacoma Megalopolis is like Santa Monica CA- liberal to the bone while the rest of the state is culturally like the rest of the Rural Western USA. West of the Mountains is Wetland- 2 seasons: wet and Summer, which may be 4 weeks of nice weather in August or Sept.; Eastern WA is like the rest of The West with 4 seasons. WA does have state pre-emption though, so you can pack in Seattle. We lived in the DPRK and given the choice I prefer WA rain and all.

Pre-LEO status.

Had to shoot a dog once. I had neighbors with two attack trained Dobes. They were up-front about it and let all of the neighbors know. They also said the dogs were superbly trained and won't leave their yard. Another neighbor and her son were walking down the road- across the street from dog owners house. The dogs came out and crossed the road. The mother literally threw her young son over a barbed wire fence into a field and barely got over it herself but got a minor bite in the process.

I saw it happen and grabbed a gun and went down through the fields behind my house to check on her. The dogs saw me, came across the road and over a stone wall into the field. One didn't go home. The other high-tailed it home very fast. For being such a superbly trained dog, gun shots sure scared him.

I also had to "display" once, but didn't draw. This one is actually funny. My wife was in the hospital for an operation. I grabbed up a pistol and headed out to visit her. On my way to see her, I stopped off at my favorite gun store. While there, they told me a revolver I had in for repairs was ready. Not really thinking about it, I took it with me. I also found a revolver that I just couldn't live without and bought it.

I got to the hospital parking garage and started thinking about what I was going to do with the guns since I now had three. The area was a fairly high crime area and cars were broken into or stolen regularly. I ended up carrying all three with me. As I was walking through the garage, I got approached by three males. One asked me for a cigarette. I told them I didn't smoke and immediately angled my path away from them. They also changed direction to approach me and split up with one going to each side of me and one approaching me head-on. It wasn't looking good. I just unzipped my coat and held it open and told them I didn't think they wanted any part of me. I don't know, maybe seeing three guns changed their minds, but whatever it was, they left very fast. :D

I told one of the hospital security officers about the incident, and he said there had been quite a few muggings in the area in the past few weeks. So, who knows what may have happened.

Pulled but not fired

I had a similar (but not quite as dramatic) as another poster. I was going to a club in Birmingham, AL one night. We had just pulled off of I-65 into the downtown area of Bham when we pulled up behind a vehicle at the red light on the other side of the underpass. As soon as we pulled up behind him another car pulled from alongside the road and pinned us inbetween them. Then 2 men (one holding a bat) from each car got out and approached our car. When the lead guy tapped on my driver side window with the bat and told us to get out of the car I had pulled my .357mag Taurus 65 from between the seats and pointed it at him though the window. At the sight of the gun they all ran back to their cars and tried to flee but the car in front of me failed to start and they fled on foot. This was before cell phones so I could not call the police immediately but luckily a state patrolman pulled off the interstate behind me about 5 seconds after the men started running and I was able to flag him down.

Turned out two of the the attempted thieves were were brothers and were using their mothers car (the one that stalled, turned out it was out of gas) to committ the crime so it was not hard for the police to track them down. I was called the next day and told all four were aprehended and then I had to attend a court date about 3 weeks later. All four men had priors, where on parole and two were wanted already for warrants and parole violations. They were all given sentences ranging from 6-15 years and I have never heard another thing about it.
