Ever misplace a handgun?

Sort of. While stationed in Germany I left my guns with my parents disassembled. When I returned 3 years later I could not find the slide for my pistol. Luckily I kept the frame because a few months later my dad found the slide while getting ready to move.

Lost one for the night once....had my pistol on the couch and forgot about it. My wife found it in the cushions the next morning and was not happy! I tried blaming the dog but just found out where she slept!

Oldkim, I do wish I had the same problem as some of you keeping track of "dozens" of guns...:(

Put something on a note, and keep the note in the same place every time you leave. LOL. Unfortunately, I've done it.

I put our marriage license in a safe place, and never found it. We had to get a new one. I think someone was trying to tell me, not to find it.

I'm relieved, sort of, by the responses so far. I thought maybe it was just me. And it's funny how wives have a way of pointing out the obvious sometimes. Now if she could just tell my where I left my LCP...............

When I moved from Fort Polk to Mo after getting out of the Army, I loaded most of my shooting Supplys including a couple of black powder pistols under the back seat.

Two years later I traded the car off.

The following morning my dealer called me up and asked me if I was missing anything.

Misplaced a Ruger Mk II for about a year. My wife Got it by way of her daughters divorce settlement. Figured my daughter's ex had "repoed" it. Two days after I replaced it with a MK III my wife found it.

Now I have my own MK III.

Yes I am guilty of forgetting where I left a handgun but then the gunsmith called me and asked when I was going to pick it up. I didnt even know I forgot about it.

Yes I have. Even went so far as to forget I even owned it. A long time neighbor was moving to an assisted living place (he had no living family to leave them to) and sold me his guns (he had 4) I was only interested in 2 of them but he would only sell the as a set to have it done and over. I sold one almost right away and put the ones I wanted in my collection, then put the other in bottom of a safe thinking I would get rid of it later as trade fodder. It sat there with military holsters and such for several years till I ran across it updating inventory.

Yes - it happens....

You hide one when you go on vacation, then forget all about it until it turns up in some weird or unexpected place.

Mine was inside a sock in the sock drawer of the dresser...
I must have looked at that sock dozens and dozens of times over the years & it never registered w/me that a gun was in it.

Big huge wool sock that the dryer had eaten it's mate.

Imagine my surprise when I finally got sick of having this big odd sock in the bottom of the drawer and decided to use it as a rag.
When I picked the sock up and felt the weight, it all came back to me what was inside it.
I'd stuck my .44mag Virginian Dragoon in the sock and buried it under all the other socks once before we went on vacation. Came home a week later & I forgot all about hiding it there.

yep

I was visiting a friend and had a little .22 snubbie (a S&W 317 Airlite) on my belt in a Serpa holster.
Met up , sat down an talked for a while in his apt. Went out to lunch. Upon leaving the restaurant, I discovered that the holster was empty. That was not a good feeling. Went back into the restaurant....not there. "Some one picked it up and walked off with It", I thought.....well to make a shorter story of it: upon returning to the friend's apt., I found the gun in the chair that I had been sitting in when I'd first arrived. It'd slipped out of the holster (not supposed to happen with a Serpa.)

Pete.

Not me ...but I was at a gun show recently. I was trying out holsters and a guy next to me was doing the same. After just a bit my wife turns to me and says someone left their gun. Sure enough sitting on a pile of holsters was a pistol. Handed it to the holster dealer in case the owner came back.

I inherited my grampa's sizable collection of guns. I have found quite a few I did not know I had. I have put a few in the safes that I picked up through trades, or puchased for near nothing and have forgotten they were there, or that I even had them.

I found a Jennings J-22 that was in my tackle box for 10 years . I forgot that a friend's dad gave it to me when we went fishing. I had not opened that tackle box for the entire time.

Why, yes I have.......I'm old!

About 6 years ago, ...I was in my mid-60s, 71 now, I did misplace one.
I was expecting an installer to put in satellite connection for the computer.

I had cleaned & loaded a Taurus snub, mod. 450, .45Colt, still laying on the table. I knew he was coming and laid it away, not thinking where the cable would have to come in the house....through a closet under the stairs.
He got here and hooked up the computer to the dish antenna.

A few hours after he left, it dawned on me to look for that Taurus .45Colt.
1st place I looked was in that closet under the stairs.....It wasn't there.
I was livid. I just "Knew" he had stolen it.

When my DSWife came home I wanted to call his Company and charge him with theft. But DSWife calmed me down, telling me she would help me look. And we did. No Taurus!
She talked me into waiting and looking some more, the next day. I was Fuming! I just Knew that young man had stolen my handgun.

Next day was Saturday........I had DSWife up early, looking for that gun.
But she had to eat breakfast first. So, after we ate she began looking.
Fifteen minutes later, she walked right in and found that Taurus .45Colt.
It was laid behind a couple of boxes, in another closet, inside the computer room.... not the closet I thought it was in.
I had made all that fussing & fuming for no good reason. Darn good thing I had Not made that phone call. I have not misplaced another gun.;)
ETA... I forgot to add...My DSWife makes me keep a running List of where I have stashed my guns, not in the safe, around the house

Still looking

About 30 years ago, I owned a Charter Arms .38 (snub nose, all stainless steel). It has never been shot. We have moved a number of times so when I went to look for the gun and couldn't find it anywhere, I just figured it was packed away in a box. To this day, I have never found it and I have looked in most of the boxes we have packed over the years. I used to keep it under the seat of a car we owned (81 Old Regency 98) at the time so I have a feeling it may have got sold along with the car we sold at an auction many years ago.

Packed it away and forgot about it for 35 years,,,

When I went to Basic Training back in 1970,,,
I packed away a ROHM .22 short revolver with all my other stuff.

That box was just recently (2006 0r 2007) found in my sisters attic,,,
The little gun was still clean & oily in the sock I wrapped it in.

I think it was Daniel Boone who said "I have never been lost, but I was a mite confused as to where I was for three days once". In the same way, I've never lost a gun, just had trouble recalling where I had put it. I too have had guns I don't remember having come into posession of. My FIL gave me a fair bunch before he moved down South years ago. I don't think I've even taken them out to the range. I do have my favorites, like the M 94 Winchester .30-30 I use for deer and my Mausers and other old military rifles, but some don't do much more than take up space in the gun lockers...

One thing that helps me is to take everything out just for a good cleaning and inspection every so often. It might take a couple days of dedicated effort, but I end up refreshing my memory on what all is in the inventory.

A couple of rifles...

A couple of shotguns... (and one of 8 cats in the inventory)

Never--I do believe that if I did I would need a change of pants (repeatedly mind you until such time that I located it). Simply can't imagine the chills it would send up and down my spine...
