Entering military and moving states

If you live on base you will have to store the guns on the base in a secure facility. The trick there is the hours you would be able to access the weapons storage facility. the My advice is keep them with the family you trust. Till you are assigned to a state where all your firearms are legal and live off post. It might be a while before you are able to elect off post housing.

Are you married? If so, will your spouse be relocating with you, or remaining in your home state until you are assigned to a "permanent" duty station?

payne,

A quick O's perspective for you:

Your situation will depend on whether you live on-base or not, like everyone is saying. As an officer, you may not be required to live on base even if you're single. I'm single and live off base. You'll need to check with the housing office at the base you get stationed at to see what your options are.

If you live on base, the most common current regulation is that you may keep your guns in on-base housing, but they must be registered with base Security Forces (and often, a gunsafe is required). This policy varies base to base (the wing commander has discretion here).

I'll say up front you're probably better off living off base if you can (and BAH can make that awfully attractive too).

Some bases still have bachelor quarters available for the officers. (Mostly over-seas and training bases.)

Like others have said, the firearms rules apply reguardless of whether you are an E or and O.

As an O, llike Buffalo Wing said, the chances are you will be given off-base quarters. In that case, find a friend with a pick-up truck, buy a safe and store the weapons at your place.

Best of luck.

Where is everyone getting that it's not ok to have guns in base housing? That's a totally different animal than the 'dorms' where junior enlisted are living.

I'm unable to find the AFI that references firearms in housing aside from that it is often a local supplement that could tighten guidance (as it works with ANY AFI). However, of everywhere I've been the regs outline that there will be no guns in lodging or the dorms. Weapons are not specifically written out of base housing.

Furthermore, if you go through the gate with a weapon and declare it- "I'm taking it to base housing" is always an acceptable answer in my experience.

I'm Married with two small kids. I have a large safe already. So, it's sounding like I should be fine.
