End of the world preparations...

I think it was 1970 when a British film titled "No Blade of Grass" came out. If you want to see how the breakdown of society progresses to total anarchy during a global disaster, check it out. The movie is a bit corny by today's standards, but the real implications of "what if" were very well done.
In the film, a viral pandemic occurs worldwide, killing all..... grass. No, not the kind folks smoke
. The grasses include most of our major crops today including corn, wheat, oats, etc. Starvation occurs on a global scale. The way the film was done made it seem very plausible. Lots of guns too, by the way.

Then from bases staged at the Panama Canal (we gave them)from the south and comming across from Korea to Alaska. (Alaska would give them all the oil they need) They land in our Muslim guarded ports and troops moved by Walmart trucks.
Along with all the Chinese immigrants that could be sappers allied up with the Black muslims (who want their own country) they take out our leaders and missle silos leaving only the navy to deal with. China will have a Navy to match ours by 2008. There ten million man army would be fresh and ready and ours would be wore out tired from fighting everyone from Iran to Syria in the middle east.

I'd like a couple things on top of what others have mentioned:
AM/FM/CB radio that is powered by batteries, solar, and hand crank. I want to know what is going on if the SHTF.
Cash: don't leave it in the bank, cause the bank may no longer be there (complete take over by China, for example). Cash will still be worth something for a short while, at least on an illegal market.
Surefire flashlight. I want to see the world end, if it happens at night.
I'd bring a map. Maybe a couple, on the big scale (state/nation wide) and a topography map of the local.
Baby wipes: our soldiers use them in place of showers when in the field. Works for them, will work for me.
Keys to the space ship I invented that will take me (and some choice others) to my private planet.

Every day thousands die in America
Most of them probably forgot to say good bye or I love you.
Didnt need any water or hair spray just a safer place to call home. Pretty sad when you live in a contry that is hell bent on destruction.
In lots of countries you, go to the market get killed, robbed, raped, shot, kidnapped.
Run over by cars and busses trains and planes.
I am still talking about America.
Wake up and smell the death folks, it is all around you.
We have a murder rapist who needs to be executed, they say it is not right because he will feel pain. Aint that a tear jerker.
Then we have the ones who are praying each night that a select few will go to the happyhunting ground where they will be surrounded by thousands of others who think the same way. Boy you have to love mankind.

Nice quip
No really we are too powerful to attack head on so the country is going a piece at a time. There was some excellent reading by a guy in Argentina that tells what it's like as society collapses on itself like theirs did. Go to Fal files (look in survival section) or Frugal Squirrel. Both sites have the same thing posted and will let you know how society will slip into pure hell a little at a time.Then learn from this and build on it.
