Encounter with a panhandler.....

The guy was giving you the simplest of several "pulls", a sympathy builder to cover for panhandling and usually used to get drug money when they are too lazy or strung out to even beg for any period of time. Another common one is "My baby needs to go to the doctor, but I don't have any gas money. God bless you if you can help." These techniques are TAUGHT, so if you hear it once, odds are you will hear the same one again. A major part of the technique is to keep you guessing as to the level of aggression he is willing to use. He wants you to think "Maybe he is telling the truth, but even if he isn't, why not just give him a couple bucks?" If he reads any uncertainty, he scales up the intimidation. These guys don't seem to be as carefull about staying out of jail as the usual folks who are just "hanging paper". I have heard of several getting desperate as the evening wore on and attacking people. If you get ANY aggression from a panhandler, I urge you to call the police immediately. The next person to come along may be unarmed, elderly, etc. Most Peace Officers are more than willing to respond to a complaint about these guys. Even if he has not yet taken overt action, an Officer getting a look at him, and getting his name, may take some of the steam out of him, and will make identification easier if he does get violent later.

Good analysis.

JackM, While I agree that getting law enforcement involved is a good idea when dealing with bad guys, you were talking about AGGRESSION by a bum. How about some advice on defending oneself? This is a gun forum, not the crocheting and macramé forum. Do you really expect that a true blue RKBA'er is going to "cry foul" to the cops first w/o rightfully defending oneself?

No flame intended, but I couldn't help it when my "liberal sewage leak" alarm went off.

Regards,

HJ
