Effective range of the 357 for hunting?

I'm going to throw out some thoughts. How far do you want to apply any type of gear? A handgun is a handgun and a rifle is a rifle. A couple of times I've been sitting on the ground against a tree and had a deer come in from the wrong side. You start down this Mexican Standoff situation. You stare at the deer and the deer stares back at you. If you move much the deer is gone. I've tried to slowly move a rifle so I can shoot "Lefty" but I've never been able to pull it off. Every time the thought has occurred to me that if I had carried a handgun I probably could have shot the deer and made the hit, as the deer are usually close- say 30 feet (10 yards). There have been times I've been stalking through really dense bottom land swamps with lots of cover and thought a handgun would probably be the better weapon.
BUT.......(always a but) some folks want to use only a handgun, they'll put a scope on it, do all kinds of stuff, try 100 yard plus shots, etc.
Well, to each his own, but the way I figure, a handgun is good under a few special situations, normally very close range. The 44 Mag is obviously better than the 357 Mag but then there is the issue of the target, a broadside shoot through the ribs at ten yards ought to be fine with the 357 Mag.

Ground blinds are wonderful things ..... but lacking that, just don't move at all..... unless the the deer is going to walk over you .... wait until he passed behind a tree to move ..... that's worked for me before.

I had that happen to me. Back against a fallen tree on the military crest of the hill watching a swamp. Heard what I thought was a squirrel coming up behind me and it was a nice buck. Wrong wind and everything and he walked right up to me and froze not five fee away. The second I moved he turned and bolted. I raised my slug gun and missed!!! He trotted off and stopped and looked at me and headed off. Very cold and the shell was stuck in the chamber, couldn't chamber another round. If I saw it in a movie or read it in a book I wouldn't have believed it. Nothing better than sitting in the woods on a cold day and seeing stuff many people never get a chance to see.

In my years of hunting, both with a tag and a gun and "just along for the ride", I have done and seen things that nobody would believe* unless they saw it themselves** ...... but ...... I will have to strenuously disagree with your statement: The Best Thing in Life is watching your children do something you taught them to do, and do it well .... especially if it was something really unbelievable .... and doubly so if you told them what they were attempting was "impossible" .... "not going to happen" ...."you're wasting your time" ...... and then they go and do just what they said they were going to do! I don't have a lot of money, but if I die with those memories, I'll be a very rich man!

*Just today i had a guy call BS on me ..... right here on this forum, on a story I've related more than once here.....

**There's a search button .... I like to think it's good reading .....

When I used to deer hunt I used to carry a rifle and a K Frame Model 27 S&W in .357 before I got my 8 3/8" Model 29 in .44 Magnum.

Don't mean to nit-pic your post but Model 27s are N-frame, not K-frame. You may have been using an older Model 19.

That's the truth right there, couldn't have said it better myself.

I found the best rane was my ability to keep all..

shots inside a paper plate was best.

This is dependent on caliber, for the .357Mag., I was able to extend out to 100 yds., off-hand with "Weaver stance" using the Federal 180gr hot cast lead bullets. This was a carry load when I hiked in the Washington Cascades.

WHen I had a Ruger blackhawk in .45LC and 7-1/2 barrel using 250gr jacketed HP, it was 75yds.

Couple of times I have used a .45 Colt Combat Commander, using 230gr HP, was ab;e to hold black @ 100yds., using base of front sight for aim point.

Just practise with what load you intend to use.
