Educate me!

Suggestion: Go to a gunshow and just wander around. Go to a gunshop and do the same. Just look and see what's there. If somebody isn't busy, ask a question or two, but don't go overboard. Get an answer or two and then go think about it. Repeat the process. Realize that not all of those people are experts, though, so don't worry about conflicting answers. Just keep on keeping on...

My opinion is that a beginner should start with a bolt-action .22 rimfire rifle. That's the least-cost way to learn about sight picture, coordination of that with the trigger finger, and starting on the learning curve.

For that matter, there's no shame in buying a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. You can shoot indoors with most any phone book as a backstop for a paper target.
