Educate me on the M855

true

That's true we must stay on the right side of the law and at the same time work to change the law and work to put people in office that will work with us

Totally agree that the "sporting purpose" clause in GCA 1968 is un-Constitutional, and needs to be changed. GCA 1968 should be repealed entirely.

So, the two men who wrote the law, said it best, how can we get them to attack the ATF?

Representative Mario Biaggi and Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan?

I doubt you could pay them enough to attack the ATF, even in they were still around to be able to do it. During their reign in Congress, they were two of the most ardent and prolific anti gun politicans of their era.

They proposed a slew of ant-gun bills, including a 5000% tax on 9mm (and other ammo) "used in crimes" (which would have made a $10 box of ammo cost $500:eek:). They were only being clear and specific about NOT wanting to ban AP rifle ammo, because they knew they couldn't get their "Cop Killer Bullet Ban" passed if it included RIFLE ammo. They didn't give a snit about our rights, or even (I believe) about cops being killed by this "deadly ammo" (because NONE had ever been). They cared about getting their pet law passed. Period.

The "Sporting purposes" concept in law has been with us since 1968. It was the mechanism through which we exercised the trade protectionism portion of the GCA 68. That part of that law was why the GCA 68 was supported by US gunmakers at the time.

It allowed for the ban on import of guns that didn't meet the arbitrary standards set for "sporting purposes" by the Fed. That power (including the legal authority to determine what was, and was not "sporting purposes" was given, by the law to the Sec Treas.

Where is has come back to bite us, with a vengeance, is that the govt has since decided to apply their "sporting purposes" test to items made and owned entirely in the USA. Something that would, no doubt have pleased the anti-gun bigots who originated the idea, but was beyond their dreams of the possible at the time they got it into the law.

Back they, the said we needed a "tool", and we gave them a screwdriver. TODAY they are using that screwdriver as a pry bar, a chisel, a screwdriver, and a butter knife. And its our bread & butter they are screwing with!

As far as how good it is, I not infrequently use IMI M855 for matches under 300 yds if I don't have handloads ready. Shoots very well out of my Rock River NM A4.
