Eagle Scout Suspended for 'Weapons'

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - An honors student and active Boy Scout has been suspended from his high school for having an ax, a pocketknife and a cellular phone in his car - objects banned from school property.
Brian said he had used the ax the night before at a Boy Scout meeting, where he demonstrated the proper handling of scouting tools. In his car's glove box, there was a pocketknife his father gave him for advancing in scouting and a cell phone for emergencies.

The items are listed in the school's "Student Code of Conduct," which also stipulates that possession of such items results in an automatic 10-day suspension and transfer to an alternative school. An administrative panel then gave the teen-ager a long-term suspension for possession of the ax and knife.

When will this madness stop ?!?!?!

The people who came up with this so-called "Student Code of Conduct" really need to switch to decaf.

Ucking Fidiots

Looks like a good "really big" lawsuit to me. Maybe about 3 or 4 Billion dollars worth.
Lose one of those, and the "conduct" NAZI's will be out of buisness for good, and then some. It's time us good people started using our wonderful court system to our advantage. ;)

And helping a little old lady across the street is now sexist, ageist, and probably a few more ists, not to mention a detriment to interstate commerce...

What gets me is that the stuf was in his CAR. Is a student's car NOT private property if parked on school grounds ? Taken to the next step, could someone rat you to your company if you are parked in the parking lot with your range bag locked in your trunk, ready to indulge in your hobby after work ? Would that be a violation of corporate weapons policies ? Think about it folks...

PS: No pocketknife or cellphone allowed in a car, what's next - screwdrivers (too sharp), wrenches (a club, don'tcha know ?), jumper cables (zap!), or heaven forbid - "The Club" !!!!

at least it looks like this one may be fought... I recall a similar case a few months ago where a girl had a pocketknife in her first aid kit and was suspended.. her response:

"well, we have rules for a reason, and sometimes innocent people have to be punished."

I want the name of this school district and some phone numbers/email addresses. As a former boy scout, this raises my anger a tad beyond my threshold.

zero tolerance=zero common sense

When I drove school bus I would carry my leatherman on my belt almost always, so di some other drivers. You needed them sometimes for minor little things. And if you transported wheel chairs you sometimes have to cut them free of the belts that lock them in.

If I had been a student vs a bus driver I would have been in deep trouble.

Yet when kids assault other kids it is usually less of a issue than if they have a pocket knife.

Because fighting is just them "being kids" even if they are extorting money while weapons are bad and evil. :(

Tom, you beat me to it.

"Zero tolerance = zero thinking."

Allright folks, here is the power of the internet for you:

The School district in question is Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools

Here is some contact info:
Virginia Edwards
Superintendent (912) 201-5585
schatham@peachnet.campuscwix.net

Dr. Robert Gilbert (The doofus quoted in the above linked article)
Associate Superintendent Middle/High Schools (912)201-5871

I say we light these guys up and let them know what we think of their policy. Will it do much good? Who knows..

Maybe the ATKI can find a way to help.. I wonder if the BSA is going to let him hang in the wind.

No. The students have to purchase a parking permit and sign a paper stating that they understand that parking on the school property requires them to submit to random searches of their vehicle and it's contents upon notification by school staff or administrative members.

Most school lots are even posted at the entrances that by entering onto school property will be considered "consent to search". Since it is Govt. property and properly posted it will hold up in court.

School property is considered a "safe zone" just like a jail. Their weapon/search policy is the same. Submit to search or DO NOT ENTER.

Not saying that it's right in every situation (especially in the above described scenario), just letting you know how it works. Unfortunately, todays law suit happy society makes selective common sense enforcement a thing of the past in situations like this. The parents of the next child that happened not to be an Eagle Scout, but turns out to be a "problem child" would no doubt sue the school system if the rules were not enforced against the Scout but were held to the letter against their child who "does no wrong".

You can thank the frivolous attorneys and liberal judges/juries that assist or award cash to the people who sue for crap like this.

FWIW, almost every boy in my class all through High School carried a pocket knife in class. Heck, some teachers would even ask to borrow one occasionally. Nobody thought anything about it.

I think knife and gun safety and responsibility, as well as all applicable laws should be taught in High School. It sure as hell ain't being taught in some homes!! That's another topic though. :D

Tom,

You summed up my entire view on the subject in five words. :D

I couldn't agree more. That was the poorly worded point of this entire paragraph in my previous reply...

I just sent this E-mail:

I just read about the suspension of Brian Agnew. This is an absolutely ludicrous application of your school's policy.

Please remember, a law or rule is void if applied in an inappropriate manner. To do otherwise is to generate contempt for authority.

Zero Tolerance=Zero Common Sense.

Rainbow Six, is the policy you're describing regarding no-personal-property one in effect in Georgia? It sounds like something which might be different state by state and even district by district. I never had to purchase a parking a permit, nor sign anything regarding parking my vehicle occasionally at the school (but this was a few years ago.)

My brother is an Eagle Scout. Also an officer in the US Armed Forces. I think it's fairly safe to generalize that--given the amount of requirements and training to become an Eagle Scout--Eagle Scouts are good kids.

This situation makes my blood boil.

What's gonna happen to the snitch???

Something I wondered about in these zero-tolerance zones. Do the school cafterias still give out knives and forks? How about Biology classes, and dissection being done with sharp, evil scapels. I would love to see a counter-suit against the school board for supply weapons to students in a zero-tolerance zone. After all the school board is definig knives as weapons and I've read stories where a girl brings a cake knife to school and is suspended, why not turn the table on them.

Lawsuits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And where does the money come from?Taxpayers pockets!!Even with insurance the rates go up so the only people the lawsuit hurts is taxpayers. There has to be a better way, like fireing idiots.
