Dumb ammo question, .38sw & .38sp

"One insurgent took a documented 31 (thirty-one) .30-40 Krag rifle hits to the torso, 9(nine) .38 LC rounds in the torso. Finally, the agressor was stopped by a .45 round through "both ears". "

31 hits from a .30-40 and they blame the .38LC for not stopping the guy? If 31 .30-40 hits didn't stop him then it wasn't the .45 that stopped him, it was the hit between the ears which could have been done by anything.

Exactly. If you dig around the internet long enough(I did) you can find the old war documents, soldier diaries, and doctor notes. The .30-40 Krag did not fare well at all. It made a pretty good defense for the .38 LC. But interestingly enough, the "shot through both ears" was the only incident I found listed regarding the .45 LC. except that it did give them a little more penetration against the enemy's home made, and quite tough, body armor. I remembered another account where one of the prisoners was escaping and was shot 4 times with the .38 LC and was only stopped by a butt of a rifle over the head. The doctor documented that the prisoner was only hit in the lungs, which any medical doctor will tell you is quite surviveable and a relatively poor target, sometimes. If the pumonary arteries are hit it is much more effective. That same round through the aorta, vena cava or similar arteries and you're pretty much done. Only thing better would be the nervous system. Heart shots with handguns are inconsistant as well.
