Drudge: GUNMAKER HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR MURDER; JURY AWARDS $24 MILLION

It's the same line of reasoning that holds a car theft victim responsible for the criminal's DUI accident. It makes no sense, and serves only to line the pockets of plaintiff attorneys. Every person has a right to assume other citizens will not be criminals. The victim is never to blame for the actions of the criminal. Nor are innocent third parties.

Moreover, a firearm is not a living creature like a dog or a child. It is unable to act on its own or be trained or disciplined. It must be used by another, and absent extraordinary circumstances which invite irresponsible use there should be no vicarious liability running from the criminal using the firearm to the owner. Simply leaving a loaded firearm in your house does not make you responsible if some criminal steals it and uses it to murder.

Cars aren't usually stolen with the intent to go run someone down with them.

They are stolen for high-speed, reckless joy riding all the time. So why shouldn't the owner of the car who has no alarm system or anti-theft tracking system be liable if the joy riders go and kill someone? It can be foreseen. Heck we all know it happens.

Great Hyompin' Hjiminy! Where'd THIS come from!?

AAAAHH!! Zombie thread!!

Shattering the pillars of my sanity!

The entire Leland Stanford Marching Band is running complex maneuvers in my reality whilst blasting the theme from The Twilight Zone! Make it GO AWAAAY!!

Well, just color me embarrassed.

I really don't believe it. It was an entire TWO YEARS AGO, that I let myself get baited into the most virulent and ill-mannered display of petty disagree-ableness that I have EVER perpetrated during the whole of my online communication existence.

I utterly lost it. Blew my stack, as it were. Became COMPLETELY exasperated, and resorted to that which I despise, cheap personal insults.

I have a tendency to get a bit lecture-ish in the face of bad manners. Stand off and complain about it to other folks, I do.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't be embarrassed about it, however, as I normally believe that I represent the standard of behavior by which others could be measured.

Ah, humility. A dish best enjoyed alone, and savored. Learn from this, I will. Rest assured.

Dang it, this thread STILL gets me going! I was firing unreturnable shots, and watching 'em sink in like water on wax. I even went off to another forum and linked to this thread, and solicited opinions on whether I'd gone overboard, believe it or else. (Nobody thought I had, BTW ;))

Still, trying to teach pigs to sing only makes you both muddy, and annoys the pig. I failed in my duty, and lowered the bar. Oh, the indignity of it all. :(

Regardless of the sparkle I perceive in my own wit, I must always, without fail, remember:

I am a HighRider. Hypocrisy does NOT become us.

Guys, let's not be disingenuous here. We all know that these cheap Saturday Night Specials have really crappy AI systems built into them. Now, my SIG's AI not only will not fire unless I pull the trigger while reciting a line from Othello that I've programmed in as a failsafe, but it won't fire at all if it senses a person with a low Evil Quotient in front of the muzzle (though the scanner does tend to get dusty after a long day at the range.)

In short, those are stupid, short-tempered guns that are hard to teach right from wrong; clearly they're defective and the manufacturer deserves whatever it gets.

That's right, citizens of The Firing Line, I come to you from. . . . . . THE FUTURE!

Anyway, Tamara made her point, and the rest of this thread is a little embarassing as two members in pretty good standing taunted each other like pre-schoolers. Since that was two years ago, I'm going to save them (and myself, as one of the mods who apparently never noticed it happening) some grief by closing this. Shame on us. :p

As I recall, that award was set aside, or quite significantly reduced. As for what Dan Rather might choose to "lead" with, the man got ANY credibility?
