It's the same line of reasoning that holds a car theft victim responsible for the criminal's DUI accident. It makes no sense, and serves only to line the pockets of plaintiff attorneys. Every person has a right to assume other citizens will not be criminals. The victim is never to blame for the actions of the criminal. Nor are innocent third parties.
Moreover, a firearm is not a living creature like a dog or a child. It is unable to act on its own or be trained or disciplined. It must be used by another, and absent extraordinary circumstances which invite irresponsible use there should be no vicarious liability running from the criminal using the firearm to the owner. Simply leaving a loaded firearm in your house does not make you responsible if some criminal steals it and uses it to murder.
