Dropped brand new HK

Got my brand new HK USP .45 and was about to break it down last night to lube her up. When I took her out of the case I dropped her about two and a half feet on the carpet. Could there be any damage? It feel right on the carpet and landed flat on the side. I know what you are thinking, "what an idiot", right.

I guess I have butterfingers. Everything looks fine on her but I am paranoid. I don't think anything could happen from 2 1/2 feet but you guys are the experts.

If pistols are that fragile then we are all in big trouble. But be wary of any lint the pistol might have picked up.

The USP is a tough pistol and it is a lot (and I mean A LOT )tougher than you think.

I think you should be fine with your gun. These things are meant to take abuse. I haven't dropped mine, yet. HK does drop tests on their guns as well as other manufacturers

On its side, on a carpet, from two or three feet.

No problem.

Your gonna love it, I have an HK Compact 45 that is simply fantastic.

I didn't think anything would be broken. But you know how it is. you just spent alot of money on something and you bring it home and you want to baby it. Just wanted some reassurance.

2 1/2" onto carpet -- don't worry. It'll see worse as the newness and novelty wears off. Then after some use you'll notice this nick or that scratch  But then, you'll also have that story about that competition you just did or that new ammo or that new "thing" and how much fun you're having with it. Just go out and get the thing dirty & enjoy it! :D USP's are tough cookies...wasn't the durability & reliability one of the reasons you decided on it?

That is one thing that you will only do once in a lifetime, hopefully!!;) At the CZ connection here in Metro Atlanta, i complimented the owner on the shoulder holster he had on the counter (his personal one). He said "Do you want to buy it??, and i said heck yes!!!! He started to take his .45 Caspin (spelling) out of the holster and it dropped BARREL DOWN to the hard floor:eek: .He didnt seem "that" upset, but i quickly paid for my mag and the holster and got the heck outta there!!

I'm sure it is fine, HK's are pretty tough.

About a year ago I was at an indoor range shooting my MK23
and it was laying on the little table between the shooting lanes.
All of a sudden the table arm on one side fell down dropping my MK23 about 3 feet to the concrete floor where it slid approx. 15 feet.

It didn't hurt it one bit, although that 1st shot after re-assy was a bit scarry...
The pucker switch was activated though...lol
It shot fine.

Wanna talk about pucker switch being activated  I learned how to take my USP with me while hiking in local mountains last summer when I had a small nuisance problems (dogs running around w/o leash or owners in sight, snakes and a bobcat sighting).
Anyway, one trip out, I took my backpack out of my trunk, swung it around to put it one my back and I hear this whirring kinda whoosh then a skidding noise through the gravel parking area. Yup, I hadn't completely zipped up my pack and my USP flew out about 10' and skidded about 5'...argh!
All I did was pick it up, wipe it off and put it back in the pack (no harm, no foul)....by the way, ammo is in separate pocket in magazine away from all the excitement. USP has a few scratches but is 100% fine. Took awhile to get back down to sphincter factor 3 tho :)

Is the pucker switch the one inside the mag well that needs to be activated with a key? The one that needs to be activated for the gun to function? If it is and it gets tripped "just because its dropped"; couldn't this be a potential liability in a defense situation?

Remember the wisdom of Master Chingchingkapow (aka don'tshootit'sme): When you purchase a new pistol, kick it to the car that way you will not fear that first mark.

"What is the sound of one .45 firing?"

/s/ Brasshopper

To join the chorus...

These things have survived 20' falls onto concrete, so a 2' fall onto carpet should be just fine. :)

Enjoy your fine new firearm!

Ian,

You're joking, right ? The "pucker switch" relates to the "pucker factor". If you don't understand that, do a google search.

The lanyard block switch would be impossible to activate from any kind of drop that would not completely destroy the weapon.

Archer, I believe Ian's post is poking fun at the recent SIG thread about internal lockout devices. I thought it was pretty funny.:)

HK USP drop test procedure:

According to SAMMI/ANSI Z299.5/1990 and
German BMI test methods. Primed case in
chamber, 13 dummy rounds loaded, hammer cocked,
safety/decocking lever set to "fire"
All six sides of weapon, plus 45 degree top
muzzle, onto rubber from height of 4 feet.

Six times onto cocked hammer onto steel/concrete
from height of 3 and 6.7 feet.

No ignition or primer indent permitted. Pistol must
function normally after tests are completed.

So, basically, you've nothing to worry about :).

Has anyone here besides me heard the (urban legend?) about how the HK rep
threw his loaded USP down range---> (indoor range, concrete floors)
walked down
picked it up
walked back
shot his business card
at 7 yards
and got a piece of it with all 5 shots...

Dan C. from HK told me this 1st and I have heard it from others.
Brian Enos and Matt Burkett used to also shoot their business cards at expos but they never threw their pistol 1st...

Huh!!!
