Driving me crazy... what rifle CAN I buy?

So... It can be a detachable magazine as long as it's a ten rounder? Or is it as long as it doesn't have one of the other items on the illegal grocery list?

I believe so, but i'm not a lawyer so this is in no way legal advice. You can't have a detachable mag AND one of the other features listed. No gun should have over 10 rounds either, that a county law.

Many people sell the california model of the keltec and saigas, which pretty much means no pistol grip and a 10 round mag.

Looks like you can have a detachable mag, if you dont have the other items.

but it also looks like you can have the others with no detachable mag.

thats just how I read the rule as posted.

A saiga may be the best bet, as most can be ordered in a hunting rifle configuration.

In any terms, its just a dumb rule.

Go with the Original Assault Rifle...a .30-30
Like an old Marlin 336...50 state legal!!

If I were in your shoes and wanted something faster acting than a bolt with a higher capacity then it would definitly be a Levergun. I'm currently on the hunt for a Marlin 336 in .35 rem, trying to find an early model. :D

To everyone, more great suggestions. While the posts referring to me moving and the uhaul link were hilarious, that's just not an option for me. It might sound crazy to every other person living outside of Chicago to live here, but even if it is what it is, it is home and where almost everyone I know and love lives. Either way, I feel that we can't just let the politicians win. They would love more than anything for people like my brother and me to just leave the city with our guns. I'm sorry, it's not their city. It's ours.

I think the PAP is gonna happen... and thanks to the nod on the lever gun. I had already planned on getting one eventually. I was thinking .44 mag but I would definitely consider the 30/30.

EDIT: That Keltec SU-16.... How's the trigger on that bad boy? I only own their PF9 and while I love the pistol for what it was created for (deep concealed carry), I absolutely hate to fire the thing!

I wouldn't count on the legality of a bullet button equipped rifle without doing some research.

Lots of folks in CA put in a lot of time and effort, and the bullet button/mag locks comply with California law. CA law, paraphrased:

Removable=able to remove without a tool.
Fixed magazine=requires a tool to remove.

Assuming that the same definitions apply to a different set of laws in IL is dangerous. They very well may be the same, but they may not, and the police and prosecutors may not be on board with the CA interpretation. There have been a couple of Californians with legal rifles arrested because the police, and their expert firearms examiner did not know the law.

There are a couple options to build an evil-featureless rifle wit drop magazines, such as "monster-man grips" and a couple variations of stocks with no pistol grip, like these: http://californiarifles.com/

"Go with the Original Assault Rifle...a .30-30...
Ask any Amer-Ind how well they work"

I'd rather ask your high school history teacher what you were doing when class was going on...

Another vote here for A Marlin 30-30. Cut to 16" barrel they make A very handy rifle.

It's not the politicians screwing up chicago it's the people themselves. They elected Rhom Emanual for Mayor for gods sake. Face it, there is no hope for Chicago. Sorry but that the way it is.

I left Illinois and traded my FOID for A CCW!

I want to keep this post on topic, but slight interjection... DIDN'T VOTE FOR THE GUY!!

Great suggestion again on the Marlin lever. I read elsewhere here that no one is liking the new Henrys, so that's out. How accessible is 45-70? Since I've never owned one, I've never looked. I know the big boxes don't carry it. Now THAT is a caliber I've always wanted in a girl!

How accessible is 45-70?

Ammunition is pricey off the shelf, but not hard to come by. Seems to average around $30-$50 a box depending on the bullet type. The upside is that it's pretty cheap and easy to reload with cast bullets and the brass will last much longer than bottleneck cartridges.

As for finding the rifle, they're not the most common thing around but it's easy enough to find a used one. I bought an 1895G from a local shop whose owner was getting tired of buying it back. He ordered it new for a guy who ran a box through it and brought it back, then sold it to another fellow who supposedly put four rounds through it with no ears in () and traded it in the next day. I brought it home for $350 under the condition that I'd keep it and not try to trade it in again.

I love my marlin 1895GS thunderstick. Load real heavy just to make the earth shake or light so you don't dislocate your shoulder. Everyone I've let shoot it has loved it...(except an uncle who some how got bit working the lever). Those levolution rounds they got for it can be found for $17-$30+ here, just depends on the day and store. Though I wouldn't recommend it as a city gun or HD. You only get 4 in the tube, that cannon is LOUD, and a 300+ gr round ain't going to be stopped by some sheet rock.

I load 350, 405 (I think), and 525 gr gas checked, pre lubed bullets from beartooth mountain. I just loaded up some to play with. Started light and moved up to middlin', just to shoot.

350 gr @ 1776 fps
Haven't chrono'd the 405's
525 gr @ 1558 fps

My dad has a 45-70 break action with a scope, since they made those legal to use during hunting season, so he's used to the 45-70 recoil. He shot my 525 gr round once and said he had enough. :D
