Dressing up your gun with grips philosophy?

Fit and function are primary and if it can look good, too, then good looks is a plus.
I prefer checkered/stippled wood over any other grip I have found (plastic, rubber, micarta, etc.). Lighter colored wood because the grain tend to show more.

Wood grips by Ahrends

I have a few revolvers and like to install fancy wood grips made by Ahrends on the guns. The grips fit my hands well and look very good on the guns. Here are a few examples:

Since I never leave factory grips on my guns (well, except for my HK P7 - they just look like they belong), what is your preference on aftermarket grips? There are two schools of thought - some like contrasting grips with the metal such as dark wood with stainless, light wood with bluing - while some like complementing grips , dark wood with dark bluing and light wood with stainless, nickel, etc. - your preferences? Of course, pics are welcome!

There're actually three schools of thought. The third being that some, like myself, choose grips that make the gun easier to shoot because they obsorb recoil--even if they're ugly.

Not saying I don't appreciate a real pretty gun/grip combo--I enjoy admiring other folks nice pics.:D

pogo2, that is an absolutely fantastic shot of that S&W 629. I have to ask, is that really the natural reflection of the cylinder on the frame? Or did you Photoshop that in?

The reflection of the cylinder is natural, and not Photoshopped in. It will work on revolver pictures taken from the right angle with the right lighting. Here are some other examples on both blued and stainless guns.

I guess it is contrast ....

I haven't been thinking about contrast or complement when making my choice. I just like the idea of ivory.

I prefer blued guns over stainless, so I guess my choice automatically makes it "contrast".

I have ivory on one colt SAA and will be putting mammoth ivory on my Python soon--have it, just haven't put it on yet.

usta have one w/ sambar stag and really liked that look as well.

When the money comes in I will be putting more ivory on more handguns.

....hmmmm, now how would I put ivory, antler, or horn on my Contender?

I've been lucky I guess, with the exception of my M-60, now equipped with a T-grip, the standard S&W grips have always worked well for me, so I tend to leave them on. I hope one day soon to start an N frame belly gun project, if so I would love to finish it off with a combination of stag grips and a T-grip. Oh-well perhaps one day.
