Dove Report

Hunted this past Saturday in Sumter Co., SC. It was my first time hunting doves so I may be way off in my assessment but the field seemed pretty crowded. Doves coming across the field would get shot at sometimes by several guys before someone would bring them down. There never seemed to be more than a few at a time. Over the course of several hours I got enough shots that I could have caught the limit - if only I was a better shot. :-(

In the end I came away with 7 (almost half the limit). My buddy got 5. It was really hot but we had a good time. I definitely need practice so I guess I better go try again. :-)

Update:

This past Saturday, I was invited to take part in a private shoot. I didn't load the gun until 4 PM and had limited out by 6 PM. It wasn't the fastest shooting I've ever seen but it was still very good. I shot my Dad's 20ga pump that I got after he died. I was more deliberate and picked my shots better than I usually do shooting my 11-87.

39 shells, 15 birds.

I was using Rem. dove promo loads from Wal-Mart. 7/8 oz. #8 shot.

Kerberos, that sounds about right. Doves often get shot at by more than one person before someone hits them. If you were spread out enough that you didn't have multiple people shooting at the same birds at the same time then it wasn't too crowded. Less than one shot every 15 min. is my definition of slow.
