Double stack .40 with short trigger reach

I'm small handed shooter. I recently shot my G27 gen 3. Love the 40 round, and I get a decent grip on it. The trigger reach is a bit much.

I'm looking at getting a full sized .40 as well, but want something I can reach the trigger better on. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Sig P320 Compact with small frame would be the ideal striker.
This is my P320 40 with the medium frame size.

You might also try getting your mitts on an M&P 40. I have the 5" Pro Series and while I of course don't know just how small your hands are or what your tastes are, my hands aren't large by any means. It's an incredibly comfortable gun that you might find to be a good fit.

I have fairly small hands and I can get a good grip and easily read the trigger on my SR40. That's where I'm going to cast my vote.

Do you know if the M&P has a shorter trigger reach than a Glock 22?

No, unfortunately I don't know. All I have to actually measure is my G20, which is about .2" longer in the reach and about .1" wider in the grip, measured near the top at the narrowest point in the region where the web between thumb and forefinger would grip the gun. Probably not a fair comparison.

I would say, though, that the MP is extremely narrow in the grip, which will have an impact on feel. I see a definite advantage to grips that are a bit thicker and even longer front-to-back, though--IMO they tend to feel better in recoil and they can provide for a better-contacting weak hand with more weak hand placement options.

It's been quite a good while since I've handled my MP40Pro 5" and I just pulled it out a few minutes ago to compare to the Glock. It feels tiny in my hand compared to what I've been shooting (I have it configured with the medium sized grip insert). It's a fun gun to shoot and shoots fast (by my standards). Highly recommended, but any M&P 40 model should give you a good idea of how uniquely comfy these pistols are for many shooters.

It may be difficult to find, unless you have a Cabela's or Gander Mountain nearby, but you may want to take a look at the Steyr family.

Compared to Glock:

Your needs pretty much describe a Sig P229 in .40 cal with their Short Reach Trigger.

SRT can also mean the Short Reset Trigger, which is a different sear and safety lever which dramatically decrease the reset and generally the shootability of the handgun.

You can get a P229 in .40 with both the Short Trigger (the actual trigger, which has a shorter length of pull) and the Short Reset Trigger (which shortens the reset only).

The CZ with reduction sounds interesting. To give you guys an idea of what I'm working with.. my trigger finger is maybe 2.5 inches long.

I, too, have small hands and prefer the 229. I have traded in an HK USP .40 because it didn't quite fit. I don't know the comparative trigger distances. There is more to grip feel than just trigger reach, though: grip circumference, grip angle and location of other controls play a role also. Like a car, test driving is best.

Have you tried the M&P with the size "small" backstrap insert?

My wife has VERY small hands and this combo is one of the few full-power centerfire handguns that's comfortable for her.

I'm sometimes surprised at how many M&P owners never even try out the "small" or "large" backstrap inserts.

HistoryJunky,

You seemed to be interested in Mystro's P229. Super gun, I have the same in Desert colors, Scorpion.

You also may already have a Sig? You asked about upgrades.

I would suggest:
1. A P229 like Mystro's
2. A short Reach Trigger. A skinny trigger that lets you get more finger on it.
3. E2 clip on grips. They're short front to back. Gives you more finger again.
4. A Short Reset Trigger (SRT)

If you don't have a Sig, look at one with the Short Reach and Short Reset.
If you already have a Sig; Short Reach $25, SRT $50 - if you install them.

The E2 grips, from Sig only, cost $59.95.

All these things together will give you around 1/2 inch additional reach.

Try handling one in a store, you won't want to give it back. :D

PPQ or M&P w/ small backstrap would be ideal options. I would lean towards the M&P as I really like the way it handles the 40.

Also, hello old neighbor. I was born and raised in Rockford and my ex-wife and children live in Freeport. ;) I moved out here to AZ back in 2008.
