Don't eat the guinea hens...

and chickens, or bad things will happen.

This cat killed 2 guinea hens at my mom's place, 13 chickens at her neighbor's, and I'm pretty sure it got 4 little barking rat dogs from another neighbor's yard before I got her.

I got her about 30 feet from my mother's hen house when she came back in for another turkey or chicken dinner. A Velocitor between the eyes from my .22 rifle did the job well enough.

She's big for a female.

You seem to be quite a cat killer Daryl. Nice one.
Around here we could kill a problem cat like that, but the game commission will take it from ya if ya report it. Our Bobcat season doesn't start untill January, and you have to purchase tags to take them and sell them. They have furbearer status. It's a little early for prime pelts right now, although our coyotes are fine. Last year cat prices were really high. Haven't heard about coyote. jd

Fisherman,
Seriously they are not a "game" animal in florida so we can hunt them all year along with yotes and some other critters...

If I ever get to shoot one I will ask my bulldogs what they taste like... Then will pass the review on to ya'll!
I have heard that they do get eaten but I doubt I would even try one!

Gentlemen, I'd like to draw your attention back to TFL's forum rules for a moment. This one, in particular:
2) Language that would be inappropriate in the polite company of strangers is quite unwelcome here.

No, nobody cussed. But sometimes it's possible to forget that TFL is a mixed audience of "polite strangers." Although your own daughter might not read here, it is a sure bet that someone's 16-year-old daughter probably is. Although your own grandmother might be deceased, it's quite possible that someone's grandmother is reading these words right now.

This means that jokes which might be acceptable in a group of guys standing face to face, really have no place here.

Although any one of these little jokes is relatively minor, the cumulative effect on the board culture can become huge.

So next time, please think twice, post once. If you wouldn't say it in front of someone else's young daughter, someone's wife, someone's grandmother -- whom you don't know well -- don't say it here.

In short: please remember that TFL is NOT the men's locker room.

Thanks.

Some of the guys in the shop here claim cat is mighty tasty! Dog too, although they claim it's a bit gamier! Since eating Fido is frowned upon in these parts, one of the guys gets pretty excited when his mother-in-law cooks a goat using the dog recipe! :)

jdscholer,

I like hunting cats, and though I've killed far more coyotes, I guess I've taken my share of cats over the years. I focused on this one, if for no other reason than I had to get it to stop the predation on domestic poultry.

The season on bobcats here in Arizona generally runs from August 1st through the end of March. The same season applies to some other furbearers, including fox and I think coons and badgers as well. We can shoot/trap them for ADC purposes in the off season, but you are obligated to dispose of them without utilizing anything. Not a problem when the fur isn't prime, although it bothers me to shoot them at that time of year. There's no limit on how many you can take here, and no tags needed except to export the raw pelt from the state.

She was prime, but I'd have had to shoot this particular cat either way. She was living off of several people's critters, and that can't last. My dad taught me how to pattern them when I was a kid, and I guess some of his lessons stuck. She was hitting this area right at once a week, and this time she showed up a day early. I was ready for her when she did.

I don't know about eating them, but I have a buddy who'll eat bobcat in a heartbeat. Whatever's left, his dogs get.

I already have a rug made from a bobcat I took several years ago with my bow. It was a big tom, and it had a really pretty pelt. I'm going to stretch this one and then see what I can do about getting a few more to go with it. It seems that furs are starting to sell for a good price again.

Fisherman66,

No apologies necessary to me. I've been busy this morning, and whatever may have been offensive, I missed.

Besides, I have a pretty thick hide, but can empathize with Staff's position. I'm an admin on another hunting board, and have been forced to take a similar position at times. Y'all have my respect for accepting Staff's obligatory position and moving on without a fuss.

Take care,
Daryl

I didn't catch whatever was said, or whoever said it, or whatnot it was about. Probably because I'm thick skinned, and thick skulled.
Patterning a cat, or anything else, sounds like something we hunters should spend more time doing and learning. I for one spend way too much time clueless about the game I persue. jd

i thought bobcats were protected species? not complaining about you popping one, afterall it was destroying your property, killing your animals, etc. . if it was me i possibly would've done the same thing.

rem, they are not protected at all in Florida. They are not game animals and are open season with the electronic call being okay when e-calls are not allowed for "game" animals here...
Brent

Rem,

They are not protected in Arizona. The season runs for several months, with no limits on how many you can take.

All you need is a hunting license.

Daryl

i think we have bobcats here, no hunting or trapping season for them though. if there is a season for them by all means hunt them if you wish. i recall in virginia you couldn't harm them. but the last time i hunted there was in the mid 90's. alot has changed over time.
