Does the 9-banded armadillo eat turkey & quail eggs or not?

Seeing as how 9-banded armadillos have no teeth and eat insects. If armadillos are tearing up your camp/flower bed/yard, you should be on notice that you have a BUG problem, not so much an armadillo problem. Deal with the bugs and the armadillos will leave on their own. They are not a threat to quail and certainly not to turkeys. Most of what gets attributed to armadillo holes is actually feral hog holes nowadays. If you have feral hogs coming into camp, it may be time to get up off the ground.

An interesting armadillo fact:

Did you know that armadillos are the only animal besides humans that can get leprosy? And that the raw organs and flesh of an infected armadillo contain the bacilli that causes this disease? And did you know that contact with this bacilli can result in the human getting leprosy?

Cook him well...

Did you know that fried up the meat is exellent. Eats like pork, maybe better.

Cleaning them does suck and I don't do it anymore but way back we cleand a lot of them.

The leprosy information is correct. What's to remember is that the average human of European ancestry would have to try very hard to catch the malidy. Generations of exposure have rendered us almost imune...........ALMOST......

Road runners are hell on Turkey and Quail eggs...Fire ants are hell on the young. I don't think 'dillars eat the eggs... p.s...:eek:I don't eat 'possum or 'possum on the half shell...

Well, I'll be danged! Armadillos do have teeth. I still don't think they eat enough quail to make any difference, but there's no arguing with Aggies who have pawed through stomach contents.

I did know about the leprosy thing and yes they do have teeth. I have turned enough of then inside out or vaporized them enough with my savage 12fv .223 to know what they have inside. 'Diller Huntin"- How us Rednecks Varmint hunt down south:D

It's a shame that armadillos don't consider fire ants to be yum-yums.
I believe they do.

The problem is that the fire ants return the favor on young armadillos.

"Fire ant infestation is credited for lessening the population of the Bobwhite (a ground nester), possums, armadillos, raccoons, and snakes, because the ants are predators of their helpless young."

My copy of Palmers Field Book of Mammals list the following teeth pattern:

Incisors 0

Canines 0

Premolars )

Molars 8 upper amd 8 lower.

Thay are also an interesting reatures in that they Always have 4 young.. Not all that interesting BUT they are always MALE or Female--all 4.

Also a friend who spent some time in TEXas said "do NOT hit one on the highway-just like hitting a basketball sized rock."
