Does Anyone Have The Walther P22 Yet

Received a call last night from my FFL after posting and picked mine up as well. Quality looks like typical Walther, good. Balance seems right. Not impressed with the trigger pull though, double action is EXTREMELY heavy and single is pretty heavy. Grip is pretty small even with my small hands, wish it was the same size as my P99. My FFL received a fax from Kiesler's in Jeffersonville IN yesterday and they have them for $229 wholesale (go figure, $50 would have bought a lot of ammo). I'm curious if they actually have them and how many since Earl's only got 10 instead of 50 this time. I'll be shooting it this weekend and will file a range report afterwards.

I called kieslers and they only had the target ones instock and they are all sold out. Sorry guys, I guess I am going to have to wait just like everyone else.

Got a call as well, my dealer is getting 2 or 3........5'inch only, they told me the regular version can't be imported (what distributor told them). Don't know if thats true or not- but if thats the case, I would imagine that Earl will get them one way or another.

YAAAAAA HOOOOOOO!!!

I have shot mine (5” naturally) and am VERY impressed. I am going to sell my Glock .22 conversion & maybe even my no-import-mark West German PP.22. Typical of Walther .22s, it needs Hi Vel ammo. I had no problem with Win. Hi Vel (40 gr) & Stingers- but it would not cycle Win. Target. I did not shoot it at paper as I just wanted to burn 100 rounds to break it in, but it seemed quite accurate (especially given how pencil thin the actual barrel is.) Full ambidextrous safety & mag release, German made Walther with a drop safety and two mags for under $300? THIS THING IS A MUST HAVE!!!! (If it holds up!)

It feels great in the hand, points well & has a solid feel, even down to the metal magazines. The double action trigger is classic Walther- WAY too heavy- Single action trigger is decent for a new pistol.

It is an external hammer, with non-hammer drop slide mounted safety. It does not mock the P99 in controls. I shot it “aardvark” style- with the barrel weight removed. The slide has a “knock-out” into which one of the three front sights (#2, #3 & #4 -again- classic Walther stuff) can be placed.

It fit into an open bottom leather Kahr holster quite well. My M3 light fits on tightly, but does not lock into place. (I may have found a heck of a raccoon gun.)

To reassemble it, I had to compress the recoil spring on the guide, insert it through the slide, grasp the protruding guide rod from the front of the slide, then place the slide onto the barrel & frame. I don’t know how one would assemble it otherwise- & no mention is given in the “manual” (leaflet.) The recoil spring is twisted wire- I don’t recall seeing one like it before.

It is very well proportioned for a 10 shot .22 pistol. With the two backstraps and magazines with and without finger rests it can be made to feel quite different. I’m sure that when (if?) the short barrel is imported it will be quite the “transformer.”

This is my first handgun delivered with what I consider sinister features- A fired case in the documents pouch, and an internal keyed trigger lock.

My two boys (9 & 12 and HUGE Bond fans) are going to go ape $hit when they see this!

I can’t help but wonder given all the work that must have gone into it, if Walther will bring it out in a larger caliber.

X

Sounds great 10mmman!

I get my P22 tomorrow. I can't wait. These things have taken forever to get here. (Typical Walther ;) ) I waited 2 years for my first P99 .40.

Glad to hear its working good.

YAAAA HOOOO 2

As a civic duty to TFLrs and at great personal sacrifice, I took the P22 out this morning to put it on paper. I shot it with the weight attached today. Thus far I have 450 rounds through it:

Win. Hi. Vel. (40gr.) 250 rds -- shot well, no malfunctions
CCI Stingers 150 rds -- shot better than the Win. Hi. Vel., no malfunctions
Win. Target. 50 rds -- This was the first round I put through the gun, it did not cycle. After the above mentioned rounds were fired, I tried it again. I was able to put the rest of the box through the gun without a failure. It shot VERY well and to point of aim (after one click adjustment to the left on the rear sight.) One group (best 3 out of 5 method) at 15 yds was ½”.

Additional observations:

The rear sight is far too wide, and sits up like a pair of antlers on the top of the slide.
It shoots well, but the single action trigger could be lighter- double action is a joke. I will be storing it cocked in hopes of compressing the mainspring.

Overall, I’m still VERY impressed.

10mmman,

Your initial observations are in line with mine. Didn't think about keeping it cocked to try and compress the mainspring, have to give it a try. I'm also going to give Earl's a call to see what they can do. I'll be taking mine to the range tomorrow and hopefully the results will also be in line. Range report to follow....

Spyder

Ask Earl's about the P22's technical data listed on their web page:

Trigger Pull DA- 4.6 kg = 10 lb
SA- 1.2 kg = 2.6 lb

Mine feels like almost DOUBLE that!

Just got mine. Haven't shot it yet, but everything else said so far from the rest of you is true with mine.

I really like it!! I'm going to try and shoot it tomorrow.

P99

Greetings,

I too, like 10mmman, made the sacrifice and shot my P22 today. Shot at 7 yards and tried a variety of ammo

80 Aguila Standard Velocity
200 Wolf Match Target (supposedly Lupua Match in a Wolf can)
550 Federal Lightning HP

Function was flawless with all ammo. I started off with 100 rounds of the Federal since it's high velocity, then burned through the Aguila and Wolf. As I've found with my other .22's the Aguila and wolf grouped pretty well with the Federal coming in last. Accuracy was actually pretty good but the rear sight is pretty wide to really group tightly (at least for me, not that great of a shot). Didn't try any double action but found the single action to my liking. I was shooting at a Bin Laden target from www.gunsearch.com (?) and had no problem tearing the center out with a few flyers (2 1/2 center). As the day wore on my flyers diminished (grip is kind of small) and actually shot very well even with the Federal. At the end it was very dirty but still funtioned flawlessly. Overall very impressed, it's definately a keeper. Can't wait to let my 9 year old son shoot it. He likes my Ruger but it's the stainless slabside and is a little big/heavy for him. This should be perfect, might have to get another.

I just put mine on layaway...

...and can't wait to try it out. $295.00 + tax for the Target model. The shop just got it in yestrerday. I wasn't going to allow it to gather dust on the shelf! I'll pick it up later this week and give y'all a range report.
