Do you think the guns chambered in .357sig be around much longer ??

I think gun store owners CAN be one of the worst possible sources of objective info there is. What's in stock is good, what they don't have or can't get sucks or is doomed to fade away. For sure, it's popularity is better in some geographic areas than other. It's pretty common here in the SE, for example, including among LE agencies. But, travelling in S. MI and parts of AK I've had trouble finding much of a selection.

I'm buying it for $8.25/50 from GA Arms, and that ain't a bad price. The nickel brass in those batches is new, BTW, as part of a deal they got from Speer on some stuff Speer had laoded out of spec. and had to pull the bullets from. I'd buy the $7.80 Blazer from Natchez if the SOB's would sell it to me here in Georgia, and it's not hard to find S&B for $9 or so.

Just took my Sig P229 out to the range last night, used my drop-in .357Sig barrel and three types of ammo I had handy. Was clover-leafing @ 20yards. Really impressed myself since I haven't shot it in a while. The big "BAMS" were scaring some of the people in the range, guess I was distracting them from hitting their Bin-Laden targets.

355sigfan, the 9mm will not fade away. 9mm is good for home defense and target practice. The round is cheap so people will buy in bulk. What has staying power is a round that sells and the 357sig and 10mm do not out sell the 9mm round. It is about sales and economics.

In the right platform, I prefer the .357sig and can see where it will be around for years.

In a full size pistol, like my Sig P226, I shoot much tighter groups with the .357sig factory barrel than I do with the .40 factory replacement barrel I bought from Sig. It could be that the weapon originally came with the .357sig barrel; however, I'm using a .40 bbl straight from Sig--I think it's the ammo, not the barrel.

In addition, the .357sig undisputably has substantially more 'pop' to it--that 20% increase in muzzle energy is definitely noticeable. In a full size pistol that's not a problem.

In a compact model, the additional muzzle energy matters. When I shoot my HK USPcompact with .40 ammo, the gun is much more manageable. I can re-acquire the target more readily than when I use my .357sig replacement barrel.

Will the .357sig still be around years from now? Yes.

But it will draw it's market share from the .40 cal following rather than the 9mm crowd. You still can't find a .357sig that you can stow 17 rounds in the magazine and the extra re-coil will cause it to be resisted by those who just like to plink. Where it will take root is in the full size pistol crowd who observe first hand the side by side improvement in accuracy against the .40 cal and like the extra zip of the .357 over the .45.

It will have a loyal following, but it will necessarily remain a rather small following.

It's like adding another flavor at Baskin Robbins--they're allllllllll good.

Just my two cents.

Do you guys think its better to buy the extra .357sig barrel then to purchase the whole gun ?? I would assume that the 40 has better resale value...

Well, if you're really interested in the "extra barrel" angle ....

.... you could get a Glock 10mm (either full-size G-20 or compact G-29) and then pick up 2 spare barrels from Federal, one in .40S&W and one in .357 Sig. They offer barrels in each caliber for both Glock 10mms. Now you have THREE (3) guns in one.

Just a quick barrel swap and you're back to shootin' - using the same mags and the same recoil assembly.

The .357 Sig & .40 S&W are nothing more than 10mm derivatives anyway. So, if one day the .357 Sig is "suddenly no longer available" - who cares? - you can retire the .357 Federal barrel to your gun safe and still go shooting with 2 other calibers - neither of which, fortunately, is an over-hyped 9mm+P++. :D

The 10mm is a fine cartridge but its popularity will cease long before the 357 sig. The 10mm requires a larger gun to handle the cartridge and for selfdefence against people it offers nothing over a good 357 sig load or a 40 load. For anti animal applications where its power is better put to use it makes sence. The 10mm in most factory loadings is little more than a stepped up 40 sw anyway. YOu have to reload to get real 10mm power. That being said I own 2 10mm pistols a glock 20 and a smith 610. The 29 makes no sence to me. ITs short barrel does not give you much more power than a simular sized 23 with 3 more rounds.

In our shop, we've sold one G31, one PT-957, one P229 Sport and one G33 in the past three months, as well as .357SIG drop-in barrels for a SIGPro 2340, a G22 and a G27.

Not stellar sales relative to the big three auto calibers, but still significant.

(In the same time frame, we sold two 10mm's, one .41 magnum and three .32 H&R Mags)
