Do you Shoot the Same Ammo?

Bulk is generally about half of what it is to buy "by the box". Reloading components are still usually cheaper, but they aint all that pretty anymore either.

I really do miss the days when surplus was cheaper than buying the components to reload, but I doubt we'll ever see that again.

I throw them all together in a box and shoot them all. Just as long as they're the same grain. :)

Also there is a man down here that has a reloading factory in Miami. I buy reloads from him time to time. My uncles have been buying reloads off him for decades they say. Also, he gives you credit towards any brass you can give him.

I shoot anything and everything I can to compare groupings for each firearm I shoot. Than I look at cost per round and pick a favorite for plinking (cheapest), hunting (bullet performance), and target use (most accurate).

From there its just a matter stockpiling;)

How in the world do you guys afford to buy ammo at todays prices?

I cast bullets for most of my guns. An example my 38s cost me less then 5 cents a round. Thats about as cheap as you can shoot 22s.

45s don't cost me anything and wont for about the next 20-30thousand rounds (total differant story).

I go through a mim of 200 rounds a week for my 642 pocket pistol, thats only $10. For a budget of $50 a week, you can shoot a heck of a lot of ammo.

I worked hard my entire career. Got the best education I could afford. Also attended the School of Hard Knocks where I learned some of my best lessons. Figured out what was important to me and what was not. Saved like crazy for the future and now enjoying retirement, hoping that I live long enough to reap all the fruit (rewards) that I have sown. I have a wife that wanted to be productive and worked...she retired when I did. We also taught our kids to be independent, responsible, and self-sufficient. I truly hope they are teaching the same to their kids.

There was a time when I didn't have the money to buy a lot of ammo. Heck, I can barely put gas in my car and my car was some crap can that was held together with baling wire and duct tape. I set a goal and found a way to climb that ladder to reach that goal, one wrung at a time. That is how I am able to afford ammo at today's prices. (And by the way, gas back then averaged 27 cents a gallon. I could drive to the next city over and buy 5 gallons of gas for $1.)

When I tell this to my kids, they usually ask if there was TV back in those ancient times and blah, blah, blah, and did you walk to school 5 miles to school every day without any shoes on your feet?

Just came from the range. Because of this thread I decided to change it up today just for kicks. I picked up a box of PMC Bronze 115gr FMJ 9MM. I shot my normal 100 rds (Federal Champion) that I try to shoot every week with my carry gun and then shot up the PMC. I noticed no percievable difference in the way it shot.

The only difference was that the PMC cost 14 bucks and the Federal was 10.50/box.

sometimes I'm just lazy

So for tomorrow's USPSA match instead of making up a couple hundred rds I gathered up a miscellaneous array of 9x19 ammo I had laying around; 125g Penn LRN, 130g Montana Gold FMJ, factory Federal Champion 115g FMJ, nickel-cased premium match ammo with that Montana Gold, and a box of various handloads and odd factory rds.

I enjoy the added challenge; hope there's no Texas Star.
