Do you make recommendations to your friends?

I ask them what they expect and want out of a gun.... and don't ever throw at them what I like. It's like trying to fit someone into the right car. Then, may offer 'suggestions' for them to try at the range.

The very first thing is to find out what the gun is for. Home defense? May as well get a fullsized pistol. Home defense and CCW? Compact is obviously the best compromise. Mostly CCW? Still the right compact is a good choice or if necessary sub compact. Will they practice allot? Is ammo cost a big factor. Define the mission and then you'll know which tool to use.

I recommended a gun to look at and he bought it without blinking,,,

Now I'm nervous.

I heard of a new (to me) gun this morning,,,
I told my friend about it at lunch,,,
He ordered it from Buds.

I specifically did not say "Buy this gun.",,,
I simply pointed it out to him,,,
He took the bit and ran.

EAA Witness 9mm/22 combo,,,
I've never fired or even handled an EAA pistol,,,
Man but I do hope this gun doesn't turn out to be a turkey.

I'll be nervous until we take it to the range.

Depends on the person.

If it's an inexperienced female, I recomend a S&W model 642 in 38 Special.

Loaded with 158 LSWCHP Plus P.

Two so far. No complaints. At least they have it with them. I doubt if they would carry a large heavy gun. I could just imagine a 8" 44 mag. Redhawk would stay home.

I thought you were joking until I read the last paragraph.

Have either one of them ever actually fired the gun with that load?

How much testing have you done with that load/gun combo to see if crimp jump is a problem? It's definitely something to be aware of in a small-lightweight revolver with heavy, lead bullets and top-end loads.

That is a common recommendation, but to be honest I have never understood why. Yes it is a simple manual of arms, but women are as capable as men of learning how to handle a handgun. Why saddle them with a gun that is so light that its recoil is uncomfortable and a barrel and sight radius so short that accuracy suffers? My wife and 20-something daughters absolutely hated firing my 642, finding Glock, Beretta, and Walther semis much more comfortable and accurate.

I have such girl hands I have no problem firing a S&W j frame 38sp. I know family members will shoot one and they say it hurts.

Now what hurts is a Glock pinky extension, my finger gets stuck between that little "plastic gap" and BAM the recoil / magazine slam up and my finger gets pinched. I no longer shoot with the pinky extension and no longer have that "pinky gap" and no more problems. ;)

I recommend they go to a range that has a good selection of handguns and try out as many as they can to see what they like & fits their hand
