Do you keep the guns in your safe loaded (assuming you have a safe with guns in it)

If I don't have a gun readily available under my control, in the gun safe I have a loaded mag. by a gun; mag. out of the gun. I figure if I have enough time to get to the safe, I have enough time to jam in a mag and rack the slide.

But, I prefer something closer to me and under my direct control. If it's not, it might as well be unloaded.

The reason why I ask is because there was a report in the local paper of a neighborhood kid breaking into a senior citizens home and forcing him to open the safe at knife point. Fortunately for him, there was a loaded gun in the safe (with a bullet in the chamber) which he grabbed and fired at the masked intrudor who turned out to be, as I mentioned, a neighborhood kid.

In light of this story, I just went to chamber a round into all of the pistols in my safe.

Good idea? Bad idea? Comments?

Some of them.

And no, its not a bad idea. If you are forced to open the safe, immediate access to a loaded pistol would indeed be comforting.

Also, if your defense gun buys the farm at the moment of truth, you'd want to have immediate access to a spare.

Would you have time to load it? Probably not.

No. But the ones in the wall rack and in various drawers and in the Blazer console are loaded.

FUD, I don't keep any guns loaded in my safe. I figure if I need a gun, it will be in a hurry. The only gun in the house, (correction) two guns loaded, Glock 26 with night sights in night stand drawer and old 870 Wing Master (20" barrel and 8 rounds of 00 Buck) under the bed. No children in the house, so this works for me. Shoot Safe....CO

Condition One, I use to think/behave the same way that you do ... the gun in the nightstand (actually a strongbox with a simplex lock bolted down to the ground under the bed -- I do have a small child in the house) loaded & ready while the guns in the safe in an unloaded state. Then I read that story in the Sunday paper and I got to thinking, suppose somebody, despite my best efforts, catches me by surprise before I can get my hands on my home defense weapon and forces me to open the safe. Having loaded guns in there at the ready will give me one final opportunity at self defense.

Does refrigerator count? If so, those are not loaded. The safe is for paper.

Sam....my favorite gun is the one in hand when needed

No guns loaded in the safe. I have 4 speed loaders ready to go for 2 revolvers. Two other house guns that are ready, willing and able at all times ;)

Try keeping one hidden in your safe room along with a loaded one in your safe. Then when the goblins are oooh ing and aaah ing the contents of your safe, you obtain hidden gun and rock-n-roll.

I mean, if you have let them get the drop on you this bad, you are in a world of hurt. I figured in this scenario, with a semi-experienced bad guy, you would have a gun at your head and a grab into your safe would be big trouble. My plan in this scenario - Crack open safe, fall on floor (in close proximity to hidden gun), beg for mercy, writhe around, come up with hidden gun blazing. Not the best plan - I admit - but better than no plan at all.

Yes, at least one, and normally two.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Greetings,

Sure, they're loaded. So's the one in the safe under the bed and the one I usually wear. I try to keep all my magazines loaded as well. FUD, my friend, if I came under attack as often as you, I'd keep my 12 gauge loaded as well (which I don't).

I've got two cars and I keep gas in both the tanks. Think about it.

Regards to all,

Ledbetter

I guess my guns aren't as cool as Sam's :(

No I don't, but now that you mention it I might. I usually, I mean always, carry a weapon around the house with me. If anyone broke in while I was here I would get them as they came in the door.

I don't have a safe but all stored guns are unloaded. All guns in transport or for home defense are loaded.

I have a revolver loaded on the top shelf of my safe. Also, my AK-47 has a full mag and the safety off, but no round in the chamber. It is the first rifle you can reach. All others are unloaded. (except my carry piece, when it's not on me)

What Captain Bligh said (one loaded mag). But on further reflection, I may change that to one cocked and locked, but not "front & center" where its the first thing you see.

As FUD was describing the event, I was worried the BG would grab the loaded gun and up the ante. Glad it worked out the other way. But if the loaded gun were farther down the eye path, the BG might assume all gus were unloaded, allowing the homeowner to grab the "right" one.

Or am I over-analyzing?
