Do you guys like the new Bushmaster "Fake" shorty ??

As somebody who has an M4 style collapsible stock on a pre-ban Bushie, I prefer the fixed stock over the collapsible and definitely over a pinned open fixed stock.

The collapsible stock really doesn't collapse all that much and you get a lot of problems with it (stock wiggle, retaining ring working lose) that you don't have with a fixed stock. The M4 style is superior to the older style collapsible stock in these areas; but the standard A1 or A2 fixed stock wins out on practical use.

Vyper,

Have held the M4 but not the Bushmaster version of it. M4 felt fine for me, but I liked the std. stock better. As mentioned, if the fixed stock "feels" better, get it! I believe that there are several versions of add-ons intended for the M4 style stock that will improve your cheek weld if you so desire.

I would personally go for the Shorty A3. I liked the way it pointed and liked the storgage compartment as mentioned (might need that with an AR ;) )

Heck, can't you get the fixed stock as an aftermarket accessory if you just can't get used to the standard stock?

Krept,
I really like both versions but now I'm leaning more towards the 16" shorty A3...I like the idea of the removable top for a red dot sight...I checked out Bushmasters website & they do list the standard stock & the "Fake " stock as an option...

I've shot one and I really thought it was cool. Very light, practically no recoil and snappy. The poor-man's M4. If I didn't want to plunk down $2300 on a preban version, this would be my M4 choice. The wife loved it!

I got one the day that they came out. I know that it was wrong, but it looked so good and I admit to being a wanna-be. The standard models are better in just about every way, but the fake M4 is more exciting to shoot. It might be the looks - I'm not quite sure.

Bushmaster makes a quality rifle. If you want a short barrel, the Shorty AK is hot. Otherwise, the 20" HBAR is an excellent rifle.

I won't comment on the fake collapsible stock -- I have mixed feelings about it, though I handled one of the new-style non-collapsible Bushy stocks and it handled well, but that may be because it's shaped more like a standard A2 stock ...

One definite benefit of the M4 profile barrel, though, at least as compared to the shorty AK (14.5" HBAR with AK brake) or the 16" HBAR is weight savings and handling characteristics. As many probably know, the M4 barrel is turned to a slimmer profile under the handguards and swings much more nicely than a comparable HBAR, which is quite nose-heavy (especially if you strap lights and other junk on there). If you order directly from BM, they'll build you whatever you want from the parts they have in stock, so regardless of what other features you choose (stock, brake), I'd go with the M4 profile barrel. Best wishes.

I was just looking at one of these this evening and am leaning towards this one myself. What kind of prices in your neck of the woods?

Why not just take a preban reciever and build a clone of the M-4 if you want one of them??? I shot the real thing and I wasn't impressed with it.

Why have a flat top upper with a barrel that has a that big arse front sight on it?

Just wondering.

Looks pretty retarded to me. If you going to be shooting with optics - then plan on it right off the bat and buy one that doesn't have a front sight. AND OR just pick up a second lower that has a regular carrying handle and front sight and just swap uppers.

The reason for this is thus:
You can pop off the Optic Upper and pop on the iron sights for when you want that... then when you put the Optic Upper back on you wont lose, change, alter or adjut the zero because it never changed. Adding and removing a scope will cause a great deal off ammo wasted in rezeroing your scope.

Jspy,
Here in Delaware the "fake" bushy's sell for around $920.00 & the other post bans in the high 8's.....

George,
With the A3 cant you also mount a red dot or scope on top of the removable handle...just like the people who have the regular fixed style ?? Is the A3 popular or not ??

The reason the flatop is useful is because you can put a scope on it and have the scope closer to the bore axis. At CQB ranges, you'll occasionally shoot way too low if you have a carry-handle sight and forget to compensate for hold-over.

Leaving the front sight post is also not unusual (and is the same as the military setup for their flattop M4s). As freeride described, you set up the optics where you can use a flip-up iron sight as backup without removing the optics. This works with the ACOG, Reflex, and Comp sights.

When using the optics, the front sight doesn't interfere with the optics at all.

Freeride & Bartholomew,

In regards to the Flip up Iron sight riser...Do you mount the system right on the A3 flat top rail itself after removing the carry handle??

I guess I'm a "wannabe"

I purchased the Bushmaster M4 with fake collapsible stock and the mini-comp. I don't regret it one bit. It's accurate, reliable, light weight and points better for me than the A1 stocked versions. I really haven't noticed an increase in noise over other versions. I paid $849 in NC, and I bought it after 9/11. It sucks not being able to get the real thing, but I'm sure not many of us have the "real" thing (select-fire, the way God intended the AR), so we're all pretty much "wannabes". Cops need not apply...

Chris

I like the M4 barrel/A1 sights/AK brake style myself, with an A1 butstock. I see ZERO use in a non-collapseable telestock. Useless. You get a shorter stock with the A1, plus you get a trapdoor compartment for your GI cleaning kit and spare parts.
