I was think about getting this as my first AR-15 purchase...What do you guys think ?? Any pros or cons are welcome...Thanks..

I'm sure that this weapon functions flawlessly, as I have owned several Bushmasters & can attest to the quality of their products. I personally find this M4 configuration ugly though. I don't care for the contour of the barrel or the ugly muzzle brake. I much prefer the look of the "AK style" muzzle brake.

I don't know... I mean it LOOKS nice, but I would always wanting to collapse the stock. I would go with the standard 16" shorty with normal stock with the stowaway compartment.

Is there any other benefit to going with that config. besides appearance? (flash suppression, better maneuverability, lighter, etc...)

I'm guessing that the fixed stock is tougher than the true M4 style one...

Krept,
I dont know if you have handled one or not but its real small & light...points real nice...I can always get a bushmaster solid stock for it...I dont like the look of the plain barreled bushy's plus the other ones have those weird looking muzzle brakes...

I definately like it! I have one on order. It should be here any day now. Mine will be just like the one pictured but with no muzzle brake. This is my first rifle and I can't wait to get it!

I would definately recommend it. People have told me that the muzzle brake greatly increases noise and recoil is so soft already that it isn't really needed. I'd rather have a 16" barrel than a 14.5" barrel with 2" brake.

Good luck with your purchase.

I dislike "fake" stuff, especially in guns. If you're going to have a fixed stock, get an honest one. If you're going to have a 16.1" barrel, put it all to work either launching rounds or supressing flash. A fake collapsable stock will be annoying ("why won't this collapse? ...oh, right..."), and a muzzle brake does nothing useful where an extra 1.5" will improve accuracy & muzzle velocity.

Try getting a good, comfortable cheek weld with that M4 stock before you decide against the standard, shorty carbine. Also, remember you're giving up 6" of hard barrel length when compared to the standard 20" barrel. And the .223 does like its velocity.

The local gunshop got one of these Bushies in about a week ago. It sold quickly. The guy who bought it was happy with his purchase, and that's fine.

However, it's not for me. Obviously, the release lever that would otherwise allow the stock to collapse has been disabled. So why include it? It's a visible, tactile reminder of the stupidity and demagoguery of Bill Clinton and the DemocRAT Congress that passed the ban. If Bushmaster redesigned the stock to omit the toy release lever, then I'd reconsider.

Just my $0.02.

You can always buy the regular buttstock for it...I was just wondering how much velocity you really lose between a gun that has a 11.5"barrel with a 4.5" comp/brake or a gun with a 14.5" barrel & a 1.5" comp/brake...Is it really that much ??

vyper005, reportedly the standard 16" barrel loses 200fps over the standard 20" barrel. I'm guessing that the 11.5" barrel would lose another 200fps or thereabouts. The .223 round needs 2800fps at impact to fragment and achieve maximum lethality. By that measure, the "lethal" range is 150 yards for the 20" barrel and 75 yards for the 16" barrel. Beyond those ranges the bullets won't fragment. That makes the lethal range for the 11.5" virtually zero, i.e., the muzzle velocity will probably be at or below 2800fps. Of course I non-fragmenting .223 can still kill you, but so can a .22LR. ;)

A real 11.5" barrel or 14.5" barrel would be great for the intended use of CQB, where ranges are measured in feet and overpenetration is a concern. However, if the overall length is going to be 16" anyway, I agree with the above comments to make it all barrel, with no muzzle break (but a flash suppressor if legal).

Another weakness of these faux-shorty barrels is the short sight radius. If I were buying a new (post-ban) AR carbine it would be a Dissipator style with the full sight radius and normal stock. Yes, the M4 designs look cool, but I would only buy one after I had a more general-purpose AR model.

Thanks for the info Dave...Someone had given me the wrong info concerning the "Fake "shorty...It does come with a 14.5" barrel with a 1.5" comp...Now you have me thinking...maybe I should look into the real 16" plain barrel A3 shorty or the 20" plain barrel A3...Hmm...Lets see...This one...

Thanks Foxy...According to the chart the velocities for the 14.5"...16" & the 20" barreled AR's are pretty damn close...Hmm...

I own one, it is a damn fine weapon. I have about 3000 rounds through it and it performs flawlessly everytime. Ultimately, its your decision. If you like it, get it.

I have a Bushmaster with the M4 barrel, detachable carry handle, and the regular butstock. I love it. It's light and fast and very easy to manuever in tight spots. A lot easier to swing than my loaded G3.

Why put a collapsable "looking" stock on it if it doesn't collapse?
Use the storage space in the regular stock to store small extra parts or the USGI cleaning kit that it was meant for.

IMO, that stock is for all the SWAT wannabe's.

Barrel Crown...

You'll get the best accuracy out of a crowned barrel, sans muzzle brake or compensator.
