For about $100 you can get a quick-open pistol safe that can be bolted or tethered to the nightstand, floor etc. Even if you'd rather have your gun handier at night it's a convenient place to store it in the daytime.
My children are adults now and I do not have grandchildren. When my kids were younger, everything was locked up in a safe. Now, I keep loaded handguns in two spots, both in drawers. One is in my bedroom. The other is in the living room. I place my carry gun in one of these same two spots. I also have a loaded shotgun in a closet.
Kids and grand kids all grown and on thier own. Guns are out of sight but very handy. 45 Springfield beside my TV chair, Beretta Cheetah 380 in my center desk drawer, hobby room, ( where the guns are kept ) Has a Beretta 92F ready to use. Last of all the CCW is a Stoeger Cougar 9mm and it spends the night on my bed side table. The rest of the guns are kept in gun cases that are easy to just pick up and head to the range.
