Do they still make Double Barrel Side by Side shotguns?

A minor disapointment with the 20Ga Ringneck was that the ends of the barrels were slightly oversized to accomodate the screw-in chokes. Thus, there's a very minor "blunderbuss" look. The 12Ga doesn't seem to have this problem, the .410 has fixed chokes - I don't know about the 28.

The "double" was me doing a trigger dance on the dual trigger L.C. Smith, forgetting which barrel was which (I've since decided they're both full, so no biggie). Light loads, just embarassing.
:o

You had asked about "short barrels". Any shotgun with barrels under 18 inches is an NFA weapon and is a pain to get (not to mention almost useless).

Now a fairly nice side by side with say 20 inch barrels would be fine and close enough to what you want. ( I always believe that it is better to have a gun that is not under any extra rules).

I have to say that I do like the looks of the Stoeger...

specifically the nickel plated with the synthetic stock. I like to buy guns with synthetic stocks more than wood for some reason. I guess I just like the way they look and I'm not as worried about dinging them up. I think I may add the 20in Nickel Stoeger to my "want" list. I know these would make a pretty good home defense gun, but has anyone ever tried them on blackbirds or crows or anything at a range of about 10-15 yards?

10 to 15 yards will work with that gun just fine. Thats pretty close still. I have read posts of people shooting trap with short barrel gun like that. They said it worked. Kinda funny. But hey, its only say 6 or 8 inches shorter than guns people hunt or shoot clay with so the pattern won't be THAT much more spread out.

I see...

Thanks for the info. I love shooting birds with my 870, but it would be cool to kind of mix things up and take the coach gun out for a try if I eve get around to getting one. I start my summer job here in a week, but I have a few guns on the list before I get around to it. Anyways, once again I have found a plentiful supply of useful information on TFL. Great people and great site. Thanks again.

I just ordered dad a Remington SPR 220 20 inch 12 gauge for 299+tax. He has talked about these double barrel side by side shotguns ever since I can remember but didn't think they made them anymore. :o He will be thrilled by this. Be a good option at the skeet range with his 28 inch semi auto Remington AND a great Home Defense Gun for him.

thank you for the information gentlemen:)

StellarPod...I check that Kimber out almost every time I go my gun shop. $4469.

The forestock is small. Different than anything I've ever shot. But it swings like a charm. I think its made in Turkey. Sweet gun.

To the best of my knowledge, there are still plenty of SxS shotguns, but the better ones aren't cheap. Start at around $1K and go up from there.

Remember, you get what you pay for.

I was at the gun shop today and all of the sxs were 20ga and 28ga. I just assumed the Kimber was available in a 12ga, but they said the only other guage it comes in is a 16ga.

Any reason why sxs are smaller guages? Or is that just my shop?

I've been looking into buying a Stoeger Coachgun in 20ga. Seems like a pretty good gun for the money and my local Stoeger dealer says that they are very reliable. Part of the reliability is probably due to the inherent simplicity of the SxS. They also seems like they would be fun to shoot. I wish I could shoot one before I purchase but I don't know anyone that owns one. What the hell, I will probably make the leap, it's not that much of an investment.

I will get one at some point too.

Shooting one would be nice first. It seemed from across the counter that most had 2 triggers. Not sure about that though. The Kimber definately did.

i have a STEVENS side by side 12 gauge with 18 inch barrels..the thing is mean....i paid like 240.00 for it.....there are other side by side short shotguns but they can get pricey...

Just picked up the shotgun today, had it wrapped, dad just opened it 15 minutes ago, put it together (NICE). He really likes it. Good defense gun he said.

A couple of things though.

1) Is the safety supposed to automatically click on whenever you crack open the gun and unload/reload? (seems like a disadvantage to me) Can it be disengaged and not automatic

2) It's kinda stiff when trying to crack it open. Any suggestions? Just work it in?

My Weatherby does NOT do that.

Mine was quite stiff also. But after 3 trips to the range and 3 or 4 days hunting and its fine. I expect it will only get better.

My buds Ruger opens really nice...7years old though.

Some break open shotguns have an auto safety. Most gunsmiths will remove the linkage to disable it for a modest fee.
