Do other states require FOID?

So, I've been under the impression that Illinois was the only state that required a Firearms Owner IDenty card for the simple owership of guns. (WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT CONCEALED CARRY HERE JUST OWNERSHIP. :-) Anyway some of the other posts have given me the impression that some other states do require such, specificlly New Jersey.

Is that right?

Idaho does not require a FOID card, we have what the federal government has shoved down all of our throats and no more.

I believe New Jersey and New York do also. Some states such as Massachussetts and maybe Maryland have different levels of ownership which require licenses or permits for certain classes of firearms. New York requires a license to even be in possession of a pistol and I believe they now require a card for ammunition purchases.

All of this is off the top of my head so somebody who lives in these states (or has even visited any of them, as I haven't) may be along to correct me.

North Carolina requires a carry permit or else a permit from the Sheriff to purchase a handgun, but that sounds a little different from what you're talking about.

In NYC you have to have a permit to own any firearm, and in upstate NY you must have a pistol permit to even touch a handgun, let alone purchase one.

If dakota.potts isn't dead on, he's very, very close. There are a handful of states that have some version of the FOID, and a handful that require some kind of purchase permit.

Arkansas is not one of them. No FOID, no permit to purchase. No FFL required for private party transactions.

New Jersey requires a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card to purchase any firearm and handgun ammunition, but does not require a permit to own a firearm. A separate permit is needed to purchase each handgun, at 30 day intervals, and they are valid for 90 days. Registration of firearms is voluntary (except for "assault" rifles), but records are kept for handguns purchased in the state.

There is no FOID in NY state. One must have a Carry permit to possess or purchase a handgun, and each handgun is listed on that permit. There is no card for ammo purchases. The ammunition background check portion of the SAFE act has been suspended.

Illinois requires FOID for purchase and must be in possession while shooting.

There is a reason I live in Arizona. Arizona is gun friendly.

I believe North Carolina requires a purchase permit, at least for handguns. It's not exactly an FOID, but it is another bureaucratic step involved in purchasing handguns.

Seems to be an east coast thing, doesn't exist here in Washington state.

If we did not have the NICS checks I would support such a thing, provided it is just a card giving evidence of having passed a background check.

When you start registering guns to the card you've gone beyond the public good purpose of the card into an overreaching government.

Only for handgun purchase, in IOWA

New Jersey requires a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card to purchase any firearm and handgun ammunition,
Somewhat related but IOWA only requires you to have a permit to purchase a handgun. There are no other "state" restrictions on ammo or long-guns. ..... :)

I have a friend that moved from Iowa to Illinois and he got all bent out of shape when he has to have an FOID for ammo. Was going to get a permit to carry but that is an even higher mountain to climb so for now, he has to do without. .....

Pahoo, tell your IL friend. . . .

Pahoo:
As noted in the OP, I'm an Illinoian and aside from the sixteen hours of required training the concealed carry is not too hard to get. After the training all the documents can be file electronically and the State police ID number that is required is also acquired electronically. I got mine after about six days and that was WITHOUT a submission of my finger prints.

That requirement has been around forever. I had to obtain a permit from the county sheriff when I was stationed there in 1970. At that time, it was $.50.

I think Minnesota still has the old permit to purchase system for handguns but none is required for possession (AFAIK).

Missouri used to have a permit to purchase for handguns. We got rid of it something like eight or nine years ago. There's no permitting of any kind required now (except for CCW).

FOID and similar is just registration of firearm owners instead of the individual guns. No proper ID/permit, no guns for you.

"aside from the sixteen hours of required training the concealed carry is not too hard to get. "

Holy Cow! I hate to ask what 2 FULL DAYS of training cost ...
