Do I Need A Shotgun?

It doesn't matter what you have now, what you're planning on getting later. Nor does it matter if you live in the ghetto or the richest of suburbias....

If you don't have one, you need one. That applies to all types of firearms, end of story.

Oops, meant to post this in the shotgun section but thanks for all the replies.

Yes, no secret, I do want one! :D With work, family obligations, etc. I don't see myself going trap shooting and stuff like that. This would be used at the range or in a home/self defense or crisis situation.

I 'm convinced but I need to bring the wife onboard, so you never know about that one....

I like the Remington 870 18". Not really interested in the gadgets and gizmos -I love the point and shoot aspect of a shotgun. The price is right too. I would feel safer having one - I definitely like the comfort of having my 9mm by my bedside at night. Anyways, thanks again for chiming in!

Ideal Weapon

I love the shotgun. Specifically, I love pump shotguns and even more specifically, I love my Mossberg 500, my Remington 870 Express and my Mossberg 590, in that order. Shotguns are powerful, take a huge amount of abuse, are very simple in function and to clean and multiply force exponentially. They are fairly inexpensive compared to most handguns and give one longer, wider reach, too.

Someone posted earlier how a 9mm slug is one tiny projectile while one 12 gauge load of 00 buck, say 9 or 12 pellets, is like firing that many shots at once. I can crank out a ridiculous amount of rounds with any of these three shottys and make a paper target look like a perforated rag in seconds. The real world equivalent is that the meth addled home intruder is bleeding all over the place, multiple wounds, mucho trauma. I can buttstroke with them, I can smash doors and windows with them. I can mix 00 buck, rifled slugs and whatever insane, exotic rounds I might want in the mag tube of my 590 and blast the crap out of just about anything.

I spend a lot of time at the Shotgun World tactical shotgun forums. Give them a look and ask the same question:

http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewforum.php?f=7&sid=3ad80ce1c857b66f23ec8576dfab8c1e

A final thought. In the dark, just woken from a sound sleep, the horrific sounds of someone breaking into your home...greet them with a couple jacketed 9mm rounds, shooting groggily in the dark, or an eruption of steel shot like a net around them? I'll take the big metal fist!

"No. Too hard to get around corners."

Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip is about 30" long. A 44mag 7.5" Redhawk that some people like for HD is 13". So the difference in size is not that great, but the firepower is incomparable.

Also, if you're ever facing the intruder who's pointing a 9mm at you while staring into a 12 gauge barrel of your shotgun, it's a good bet he'll be much more agreeable to putting down his gun and getting the hell outta your house once he calculates his chances in a shootout.

If I may suggest, read Ayoob's little booklet "StressFire - part 2, shotgun". A good way to make yourself comfortable with using a shotgun.

The only downside is if you have little kids around, then it's harder to keep a shotgun handy as opposed to a handgun.

If I lived in L.A. I would have, at least, some type of weapon allowed by law, somewhere accessable at all times. :D

I Lived in Oceanside during the R.K. riots and for about a week I didn't go farther than a couple of block's from my apt. Still, in that time I was jumped once and shot at once because I was "white". It may be limited in scope, but on a personal level, S. deff. can H.T.F

It's all over the place: better to have and not need, than to need and not have....

Thanks EJJR. I actually grew up in Carlsbad and when I was 18 I ended up sharing a place in Oceanside with a bunch of guys and worked at a shop on Hill Street. That was the early '90's and definitely had my share of crackheads and gangbangers back in the day down there. I would have been well served to be a firearm owner then as I am now......

well, you got your two pistols, so what does as shotgun do, that a pistol cant ?

aside from that, there isnt much more to think about with a SHTF situation.

recreation is another story.

Of COURSE you need a shotgun!!! :) :) So do I! I need another one.

You also need another pistol, and a rifle or two. (And so do I!) :)

The answer to the question "Do I need another...?" is ALWAYS, "YES!"

Now, go home right now and tell the wife that you must purchase more guns.

Hey at least most shoes are cheaper than a ferrari :D

Yeah you need a shotgun if you don't have one. 12 ga is recommended for takedown but someone said that a shotgun is hard to get around corners. Well so is an AR but they still work. Mossberg 500 was mentioned but if you are going to use it for sproting puroses remington makes some good auto loaders and pumps too. I like my mossy 500 and my rem 870. The mossberg is a little heavier and isn't as solid in the slide wobbles a bit but you just can't beat reliability (my remington got snow in it once and it wouldn't fire  But after thawed and cleaned it worked fine.)

You live in LA - you definetly want and might possible need a shotgun.

Buy one they are great insurance and wonderful for piece of mind.

Remember March 1992 (Rodney King Riots) and the Korean store owners?

Since you are in LA Turners Outdoorsman and Big 5 Sporting Goods have shotguns on sale all the time.

The well rounded home defense/carry collection should include the following...

Pump Shotgun 12 or 20 gauge
AR-15 or similar type rifle
Large caliber semi-auto
Small caliber semi-auto or revolver for light conceal carry.

I have a Remington 870 in 20 gauge coming in that is getting the full treatment.
Surefire forend, collapsible stock with Hogue pistol grip, side saddle, and eventually an EOTech or some type of optic.

I recently dabbled into the shotgun world after considering this very question (are two pistols enough?). You can get a good shotgun for less than 450-500$.

I got a Stoeger single barrel break open 12 ga for less than 100$ new. It is the most basic shotgun made.

No doubt, I lived on Grant St. behind Oceanside H.S., had a crackhouse right across the street and can remember atleast 4 different gangs between where I lived and the boardwalk. Bad neighborhood, very bad.... Never knew that wearing certain baseball teams caps could land one in so much trouble before I moved out there. o.O

Though we did have a few neighbors from Camp Pendleton in the complex; though I seriously wonder why they would live there instead of on-base. Almost everynight gunshots could be heard in the vicinity. Ahhhh, the memories....

LOL her response was fine sure you can but that she must purchase more shoes

Very fair compromise. Her happiness for your sanity. :D

Thnx MM, now you have me thinking of firearms I should have.... I was hoping to just get by with a handgun and SG... Just peachy... :p :D

I believe that all lawful citizens should own at least,
1 handgun.
1 rifle.
1 shotgun.

If they can afford more then they should get more.

Get two. A M4 Super 90 sawed off to a 18" barrel, and a remington 870. That way shoot about 3 times with the super and then shoot once with the rem. Then show the rem to the police :D
