Do I Need A Shotgun?

Hello Shotgunners

Like the title says, I'd like your opinion as to whether or not I need a shotgun. It's a subjective question I know. I currently own a SA XD9 9mm and an S&W 642 snubbie. I live in a rough city but I'm in a nice part of town. The truth is part of me just wants one for the fun factor of shooting them and I enjoy collecting guns and just owning them in general. So....what do you think? Am I set with the two handguns I own already? Scenarios that come to mind are home defense and breakdown of civil society in the event of a catastrophic earthquake, civil insurrection, etc. Don't laugh, it could happen - this is Los Angeles. Anywhoo, please discuss. Thanks in advance for your input!
 
Do you Need a shotgun? No, But I think it would highly desireable. After All everyone that lives in LA knows you can count on the LAPD to protect you. I don't know if you still can out there but I would be looking for some sort of AR too. I know your restricted to 10 round mags.

I solved the problem 7 years ago by moving out of that area to PA.
 
A more versatile weapon was never invented than a quality 12 ga. pump shotgun. In my opinion you need at least 3...........:D Just kidding. Mostly.

Anyway a standard 28" removable choke Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 can be had for a little over 200.00 in most places. You can then upgrade to your heart is content with aftermarket accessories and extra barrels.

If you think you are just going to keep it as an HD/SHTF gun then you'd be advised to start with the Police or Tactical models of either. That way you get the short barrel/long magazine from the get go.

I hunt with mine so I went with the original configuration Rem 870 (28" barrel) which i then bought a 20" IC Rifle sighted smoothbore slug barrel for and added an 8 shot extension and 4 shot sidesaddle. I've got about 420-440 in mine all total and I can switch back and forth from sporting to HD configurations in about 20 minutes.
 
Yes, you do, if you take your self defense seriously.

The only reason to have a pistol is if you can't reach a long gun fast enough.

9mm:
1 projectile giving you about ~370 foot/pounds for some of the hotter loads.

00-buck:

9 .32" pellets with an energy of ~180 foot/pounds per pellet - so you're dumping ~ 1,620 ft/lb into the BG.

enough said.
 
Why not? They are fun and potent firearms.

The only problem is that once you buy one, you are going to need a clay-thrower and large amounts of orange disks for excursions out to the desert...

Once you start shooting shotguns, you will be hooked for life.:D

Yeah. You need a shotgun. As pointed out earlier, the difference in energy dump is astronomical. Of course, if that's how we measure utility, we should all have a .700 Nitro Express.
 
Everyone needs at least one shotgun. For HD/skeet shooting/upland game hunting you might be able to get away with one. Go waterfowl hunting/trap shooting, and you'll need another. Or more. :)
 
Shotgun makes a good car carry gun for backup, home defense gun and Trash Hits The Fan gun. Shotguns are sometimes called Riot guns. They are an intimidating and effective weapon at close range.

I sometimes carry my Remington 870 18 inch Police Magnum in the back of my car when I travel or go out at night.

YES, get a shotgun. You never know when you may need it.

Also, a good rifle of your choice might be good to get too as a long range weapon for Trash Hits the Fan situtations (Even a bolt Action 30-06 Remington 700 will do fine)

THEN you will be set. Then you can just start collection for fun:)
 
One of each type

When in doubt everyone should have a minimum of four types of firearms. Revolver, Semi-Auto Pistol, Shotgun and Rifle. Then go from there.
 
my minimum: 1 each: small pocket pistol(.380 or .38 minimum)
rifle .243 or heavier(food)
shotgun(20ga minimum)
 
Well speaking as a guy who never had a shotgun around and just recently bought one i think that everyone should have a shotgun. Even if you dont want to use it for home defense take it out to the trap range and bust some clays with it its a hoot and a holler.
 
It's not a question of whether you need a shotgun. It's a question of which one to get first. My vote goes to the 870. Awsome platform. I have two.

Good enough reason for me!

You also need a buddy with a shotgun, and a $10 box of clay pigeons, and a $5 red plastic throwing tool. Then you need to take turns throwing for each other and blasting the clay pigeons out of the sky.

It will improve your shooting skills.

And it is fun.
