Do I Need a Henry .22 Lever Action

Well, I dusted off the 77 and shot a few clips through it. Someday when I don't work up a sweat walking out the door I need to adjust the sights. But it is hard to do with sweat pouring into you eyes.

The major problem is it did not cycle the Remington Goldens very well, but it did seem to get better towards the end. Maybe just needs more shooting to loosen things up.

But I can still hear the faint mating call of the Henry.:)

I have a H001 it is just plain fun to shoot and I've had zero problems with it.

I can understand buying a new rifle because one of my current guns won't shoot crappy Remington rimfire ammo... ;)

That's why I keep the Remington stuff around! :D

I'd buy that Henry in a heartbeat!

P.S.

So it is not like I need another .22 long gun.

What does "need" have to do with anything?

dgerwin said... You guys are about as helpful as my buddies over at Pipe Smokers Forum when I ask if I should spring for another meerschaum pipe.

You certainly came to the right place for some encouragement! Try Rimfire Central. :D 1-Q it is.... (that's code).

Really and truly, the Henry H001 is a very nice little 22 rifle. You can certainly buy more expensive ones, especially in lever action. It is a very fun rifle to shoot. For me, it's shortcoming is mounting a scope. A scope just doesn't look right on one.

The Browning BL-22 is also a very nice high quality lever gun. The short lever throw makes it easy to eject and chamber another round without taking the gun off your shoulder.

When I was looking for a lever. 22 I compared the marlin. 39 and the Henry... For me the marlin was the nicer gun and worth the price delta as I dont plan on getting any more 22 levers after that one. Henrys are nice too, so you cant go wrong with either.

dgerWin11 and CockNBama: Can't talk either one of you out of the lever or the pump. Nobody talked me out of them so I have both. Love them both!:D:D:D

Are after market parts available for Henry levers to replace plastic parts like the barrel band? I don't know when they switched- and maybe they were always plastic... dunno. But it seems to me they ought to be metal. And, maybe that's the only plastic part on them... again, dunno.

The front sights and barrel band on the standard round-barrel models USED to be plastic (up to a few years ago), they are now made with metal. I checked on Friday when I was handling them, and I can assure you, they were made of some type of metal alloy.

I also heard that if you have an older model with the plastic parts, that you can contact Henry and they will send out the newer metal parts to you. (some posters on different sites said at no cost to them, don't know for certain though)

As far as aftermarket parts...
I think you can find many, many rear sights for any of the models that Henry sells as they are standard sights. The front sights on the octagon barreled Henry versions (frontier, Goldenboy, pump) are dovetailed, so you can get any number of front sights with the proper dovetail dimensions. The front sight on the round barreled model is another story, as it has the wrap around band as part of the whole sight. Hi-Viz sells a fiber-optic sight for it though (can be found on Henry's websight as well).

I hope you evil enabling bastages are happy. I am now the proud owner of a Henry H001.

Congratulations. You won't regret the purchase. Fun little rifle! Now go smoke that pipe and enjoy both the rifle and some fine aromatic tobac.

I'd really like one of the 22 Magnum Henry's.
No pipe though...gave that up last year in favor of an advanced Ecig vaping device.

If harmlessly shooting stuff up for fun is what constitutes your idea of a shooting sport, the line between "need" and "want" can be perilously thin. I recently satisfied such a need myself, and it's quite possible that in another few years I might satisfy it again.

I'd skip the tobacco, though - that stuff's bad for you. But to each their own...

Hehehe,

Don't worry.. I'm a few weeks behind you... maybe.... I have to decide between the Henry or replacing my fuel pump/ battery in my old MG that has sat to long. Quickest way to lighten your wallet is to buy a old British roadster ;)

You want to see enablers? Go visit the acoustic guitar forum I belong to. They'll have you buying guitars left and right, even if you never played a chord in your life, lol.

Congrats on your new rifle, please do post a range report so you can enable other as we have enabled you ;)

Over at PSF, I am proud to say we are excellent at spending your money on pipes and tobacco. Of course I do try to get them to buy my pipes.

But there is also a gaggle of gun enablers there too. Not one of those SOBs tried to talk me out of this purchase.

SWEEEET!!

Just got back up from the range. Now that the sweat has quit running off me, I can report.
I am no marksman and I might get the terminology wrong, so bear with me. I was shooting from a standing position, no support. Just rifle to shoulder. Iron sights.
First I set a 8" bull's eye at 15 yards and took 7 shots. 3 bull's eyes, 2 9s, 2 8s
Next another 8" target at 25-30 yards 8 shots. 3 bull's eye, 1 9, 2 8's 1 7, and 1 flyer.
I think it is a keeper.
I fired 60 shots all together. No hiccups in the action at all.
