Ditto on the "everybody NEEDS a .44 mag" thing. I liked them so much I bought the company. LOL. Just kidding, but I did buy two M44's and will buy more. I originally got mine for the griz defense scenario. Now I just love having them. I wear one on the side even when I am in the lowlands fishing. There's an immeasurable peice of mind that one gets when one is carrying a hand canon. I used to pack a .22 semi auto, and was kind of nervous when alone in the wild -- humans, wild dogs, black bears, etc would be dang iffy to dispatch with a .22. But the .44 -- now that's a whole different story. And it can be so versatile. I load the Speer large hole hollowpoints in a .44 special load when I'm just packing for humans. And I use soft lead .44 mag hollowpoints when I am fishing the plains. But when I am in the mountains I am loaded with 300 grain hardcast hunting ammo for the bears. I agree that the .357 may be the most versatile caliber, but it ain't versatile enough to be considered a "real" defense against a grizzly by most. As far as cheap ammo goes, if you want cheap, then buy a 9mm. But for my needs/wants, six rounds of .44 mag beats 15 rounds of 9mm any day.
