Do I need a .44magnum?

Ditto on the "everybody NEEDS a .44 mag" thing. I liked them so much I bought the company. LOL. Just kidding, but I did buy two M44's and will buy more. I originally got mine for the griz defense scenario. Now I just love having them. I wear one on the side even when I am in the lowlands fishing. There's an immeasurable peice of mind that one gets when one is carrying a hand canon. I used to pack a .22 semi auto, and was kind of nervous when alone in the wild -- humans, wild dogs, black bears, etc would be dang iffy to dispatch with a .22. But the .44 -- now that's a whole different story. And it can be so versatile. I load the Speer large hole hollowpoints in a .44 special load when I'm just packing for humans. And I use soft lead .44 mag hollowpoints when I am fishing the plains. But when I am in the mountains I am loaded with 300 grain hardcast hunting ammo for the bears. I agree that the .357 may be the most versatile caliber, but it ain't versatile enough to be considered a "real" defense against a grizzly by most. As far as cheap ammo goes, if you want cheap, then buy a 9mm. But for my needs/wants, six rounds of .44 mag beats 15 rounds of 9mm any day.

I personally would question the "alleged" masculinity of any "male" who did not own a big boomin' .44 magnum. Somewhere in Valhalla Elmer Keith is looking down ready send forth doom upon you....

I didn't need a .44 Magnum, but I'm glad I got one.
A used S&W 629 3".

Sure, it's expensive to shoot, but it's worth it!

I say, get what you want and enjoy it today cause you might not be around tomorrow.

To be able to take advantage of the versatility of the .44 mag, one must reload.

Reloading .44's give you all the versatility in the world and ccheap ammo to boot. You get to choose your bullet and load.

All you can pretty much get in factory ammo is the full house stuff AND you cant choose your bullet. Its expensive and you take what you get.

Shotshells, Light bullet light load, light bullet heavy load, heavy bullet light load (nice), heavy bullet heavy load, medium defense loads, jacketed, hardcast, hollowpoint lead, hollowpoint jacketed, it goes on. Everythings available to the reloader for ridiculously less than factory.

Hows 50 rounds of bear stomper 320 gr hardcast at 1200-1400 fps, for 4 bucks sound? (These are the expensive ones I reload).

Oh forgot, you may want plinking loads? Figure about $2.50 per box of 50 rounds. I've loaded the 250 gr Keith bullets so light that there was ZERO muzzle rise! Very fun.

One thing I dont agree with that some have been saying is that the 357 is the most versatile? What is the reasoning behind that? Do you mean with factory ammo? If so then I agree also, but if your talking reloads then I dont agree.

Everyone here needs a 44 Magnum. I wish I had never gotten rid of mine. The only consolation is knowing that the pair I eventually get to replace it will be larger. :D
