Do handguns suck?

When you read or listen to people's comments about certain handguns everything available is severly flawed. Sig's rust if you look at them crooked and frames crack, Beretta's slides break and fly back at you, Glocks explode, HK USP's firing pins break after a few dry fires. They all seem to have serious problems. Personally I think that 99% of these quality handguns have no problems. It is just that the 1 in 100 that do have issues get a lot more exposure. What do you guys think?

Gun shop commandos babble endlessly about the "magic sword." If only you have this or that, you are invincible or that this or that will "never fail." As if the gun fights and not the individual.

All guns break. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

It's just human nature. Remember the Beretta's with exploding slides? After all the hub-bub died down and actual research was done, a single incident of a military Beretta's slide blowing up was found. That gun was firing a highly modified souped up round the gun was never designed to take. The Seal firing in lost some teeth and every Beretta hater around now had a reason to bash some more. Look at all the Glocks out there, tons of them. Name one incident that you know of first hand (no, a "trusted source" does not count). People who don't like a particular firearm grab these stories and tell it like it happens every day, if not several times a day. A good example is if I own a H&K USP, I may despise Glock and bash them any chance I get. The bottem line it that the majority of Gun Makers out there put out quality products. I would not be afraid to pull the trigger on a AMT, Beretta, Colt, Glock, H&K, Kahr, Kel-tec, Kimber, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, etc. (in alphabetical order so as not to step on toes ;) ).

Give someone an outlet to bitch, and they will.

(I HATE my $&*/±°§¤ rusted SIG P-220.)

MY guns are perfect. I NEVER complain.

(Aww, °Ù$"&ÿ! My P.O.S Diamondback needs retiming again.)

I think people need to see the bright side of things. There's too much negative thinking out there.

(B$?/"øƒºds! B$æVôó* that Frank Pachmayr! I've lost the f*Ø£øæô&º snap-ring again!)

I have never seen a Glock suffer a kaBoom, but I have seen two Colt's (the first was a .38 Stupid, the other was a .45 ACP) suffer a kaBoom. It's okay to talk trash about Glocks, but we must dance around the egos of many Colt owners.

I had the opportunity to see a Colt Gold Cup go kaboom. The kaboom was the result of a reload with no powder being followed by a fully charged round. I think 99.9% of the kabooms are the result of bad ammo.

I put faith in Darwins theory of evolution... at least handgun wise

Only the strongest survive. Glocks, Sigs, Berettas 92 series, 1911's,Hi-powers etc. have all been used extensivly by a large cross section of people and agencies. If any of them were total junk it would have been found out by now and they would not be around anymore.

Each has advantages and disadvantages over the other and ergonomic, economic and just plain preference advantages to individual users. Asking which one's "suck" is the same as asking which ones "best" which comes down IMHO the same as asking how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Yes, all handguns suck. As a public service, I've been authorized to collect all these lousy examples of engineering and dispose of them properly. I'm ordering the extra safe for the first shipments as we speak, please do not delay in sending all your handguns to:... :D

Mine suck a lot of money out of my wallet and convert it to lead and smoke.

You only hear about the problem guns. Having several thousand people saying "I have shot 2000 rounds of off-the-charts handloads through my gun without a single hiccup" is just boring.

Anything made by man will break. Along with mass production came mass problems. Some worse then others.

As Tamara might say: No, they don't suck. They're the bomb. They rock the house. They are the $hit. :)

Well, compared to a rifle, they suck, unless you need to conceal them or carry them all day.

I dunno, mine don't break, but I'm not one of these thousands-of-rounds-per-year guys. I don't soak them in saltwater either or tie them to my bumper on the way to the range. I'm just a hundreds-of-rounds-per-year guy, so my handguns haven't been thoroughly tested.

Firerarms are man-made mechanical devices. They will break. Do your part to minimze the chances of that happening. i.e. use the proper ammo, check before firing after dropping muzzle-first into the mud, etc.

For every sport or hobby there is a group of "Enthusiasts"
-if they weren't loaded to the gills with opinions they would not be "Enthusiasts". My archery pals make us look mild-mannered, POV wise.

and you know what they say about opinions:)

The only sure way a mass produced group of mechanical devices can be found totally free of defects related to function is to make sure they are never used or made to function after manufacture.

With regards to the Beretta slides flying off / cracking...

The ammunition used was a custom loaded 9 mm cartridge that used a .357" 145 grain, SJHP, and was loaded to pressures that no pistol was designed to handle on a consistent basis.

There have been several good threads about this in the past discussing why it is is that people will go to great lengths to bash others favorite guns. I dont' know why - but I suspect it has little to do with the guns. I think it has more to do with thing like the characteristics of human nature...

And as to the survival of the fittest theory - how do you explain the continuing existance of Lorcin and Jennings while Dan Wesson has gone down how many times?

Yeah. I hate handguns. I hate the smell of burnt gunpwder. I hate the smell of Hoppe's and I hate sex too. I hate icecream, pizza, steak and gumbo:D
