Do Any Other TFL Member's Like Their S&W 686?

Good guns, but.... I have to say the 6" is just not for me.

I prefer shorter barrels, so my favorite is the 3".

686 2.5" Smith & Weson

I found a like new used 2.5" 686 at a local pawn shop last year and I bought it for $225.00 out the door. I installed a Bullseye Spring Kit in the gun, did an action job and it is so sweet now. If Smith $ Wesson, politically speaking, ever gets their act together, I'll buy a new 4". In the mean time it's new Rugers for me. I also own a Ruger Redhawk .357 stainless and it's the only one that I have ever seen. They are rare, Ruger only made them for a short period of time, back in the early 80s.

I really would love a 686 6" in stainless steel!!
I would prefer one to a ruger Gp-100.....now..if S&W would just do away with that agreement!!

I picked out the 686 PP after my Chief's Special KBed. Had a trigger job before it left factory. Shoots best, so far, with 158 CCI Blazer. In fact, limited reloading has yet been able to duplicate the Blazer's accuracy.
The 686 is getting little use these days as I have a 625-2 that has my full, fun attention.

For my birthday in 1987, My wife gave me a 686 with a 6" Barrel,I have just started to get serious about shooting it. And I have a question maybe someone can answer it for me. I'm reloading with a Hornady 148 Gr. HBWC,
with 3.1 Gr. Bullseye, Win Primer, At 25 yds. they shoot OK... But not the best I've shot.
The question is: The bullets are hitting the target sideways...
Can anyone help me to correct this?
Are anyof you out there reloading a 38 special for match shooting, that has
a pet load for a 686 6"er, That you would like to share...
Thanks,

Have a 686-3 4" and I shoot it better than any handgun I've ever owned. It's my first S&W revolver. I want to try some other S&W revolvers to see if they measure up to the 686. Maybe a M28? Got my eye out for one. Besides, I need something blue to go with my new stainless friend. :p

686 6-shot 4" is, to me, the PERFECT pistol. Fits my hand just right, shoots great. Because if it, I went out and got a 617 so I could save a few penneys practicing.

That gave me the S&W bug so I wound up getting a matched pair of J-framed 3" barrel pistols for my women, one in .22 and one in .357

Next I'll be looking at a concealable snubby in the same family.
When you have a winner, keep rolling 'em.

You may want to try posting that question over in the Handloading and Reloading section. There's a lot of knowledgeable and helpful folks over there... :)

Like the 686

I have a 686 with the 2 1/2 inch barrel. The gun has been to the factory for the revolver action job. Great Gun before the work, awsome gun after the work. The gun is a great shooter and can handle any of the hot 357's or the light 38's. I also have the 6 inch 686, but I shoot the 2 1/2 inch gun more often. Best.

G'day Dan - I'm a bit late getting to this thread. I have had computer problems lately - fried Motherboard, using son's laptop (almost went blind - Goddamn, those laptops are tiny). But the 686 'L' frame is one of the very best Smiths I have ever used; especially the adjustable front sight version.
I dither between the Model 66 ('K' frame) and the 686. For right or wrong I have decided that the 686 is the one for a 6in barrel and the 66 for the 4in barrel. Either way both are excellent and fully adjustable guns. I happen to like the stainless varieties - I guess anyone would when they have more than a few - it's just being practical.
