DIY Porting on a shotgun?

I wish I could shoot 20 rounds a month :D

I still get 10 in about 3 a week, granted there 25 rounders...Then the clays I shoot at the free range.

great story Zippy ....

I don't shoot much registered Skeet ( or anything else these days since my eyes got so bad )...as you know .... but the one Skeet shootoff I was involved in a few years ago ( and I didn't go 100 straight ) ... but there were 4 of us tied, in our class .... 3 guys in their 50's probably......and one young lady about 16 or so (and shooting a 20ga in a 12ga event ) ..... and I hung in there awhile ... but she whipped all 3 of us on the 4th or 5th station .....

No shame in being beat by a better shooter ....regardless of their age ....

Damn, sorry for being late to this party..........

Porting is a waste of time and money - done by an amateur home-schooled gunsmith, it will ruin the value of the gun and solve nothing. As it is now, it solves nothing. Done by someone with a Shopsmith, I can't imagine the outcome.

I shoot sporting, skeet is when there is NO ONE on the 5-stand or sporting fields. To make it challenging, shoot it low gun, don't worry about the stake or your score - work on your low gun mount and reading the target.

Then move to the 5-stand, and then to the sporting field.(and then to the FITASC field)

The ability to Move, Mount, Shoot consistently will make you an excellent shooter

All of that, (to keep this on topic), will replace ANY benefit from ANY type of porting

oh boy ....he's stirred up now ...... :p

he's going after "Porting" and "Shopsmith's" in one big blow .....take your best shot OneOunce, I can take it ....

( but I agree on the ShopSmith) ...:D

I've shot with two guys who did the redneck porting to their guns. It was clear that they did it themselves. Looked terrible.
By the way, IMHO porting is worth having on an o/u. Not worth having on an auto.

Ah Geez Jim.....add some pain pills, a little wine...........and losing my post.........oh well...............
It's simple -... porting sucks...plain, simple, truth told.................anything else is wishful thinking

I originally posted the Plasma thought jokingly. But I have seen some wonderful plasma work. I would love to see any constructive response on that.

Zippy, if that Al Clark you cite is the Al Clark who crushed the competition at Camp Perry in the 60s, he still shoots well. He uses a Model 21 most of the time these days instead of a GM, but he still whips my butt on occasion.

He's one of the Geezer Squad.

As for porting, I see little use for it, but if it floats your boat. It does make a difference with noise levels...

One of my shotguns is ported, I didn't do it and I can't see much difference but then its an 18" barreled gun and its loud anyway. I don't have a clue if its an improvement or a mistake but it patterns well with a full choke installed and that's all that matters to me.
