Distance Shooting

300 - 200 yards would be a better idea for doing this.
with this range you get iron site visibility or even the available low budget optics to work well with.

going above that you'll need to start doing ballistics / judgments shots

but its up to you

You will not find a better bang for your buck shooting long distance than 308 Win or 223 Rem.

If you shoot 308 Win, the Berger 168gr Hybrids are about the best choice today, they have a completely different profile than the old 168 SMKs and are stable in the transonic zone.

If you choose a 223 option, the 80gr Amax is about the best bullet you can get for long range. If you build a rifle on a Rem700 or Savage10 short action, you can load those bullets LONG for a Wyldle or CLE chamber to get get maximum case capacity.

If you wanted to go with something other than 308/223, you could pick any of the 6.5 family 6.5x55, 260 Rem, or 6.5 Creedmoor. You can launch the 123gr match bullets fast enough from those platforms to really stretch your legs.

But for "bang for buck" you can't really beat the 308.

I won't take a shot on a game animal beyond 350-400 yards, that's just me and my comfort zone for a clean kill. That being said I do shoot small furry critters at longer ranges (P-dogs and such).

CZ used to make a sniper rifle in .308 that was pretty reasonable and had most all of the adjustability you'd want. Guys serious about long range shooting are leaning toward the .338 Lapua. Others swear by the .300 WinMag. Me, I'm satisfied with my CZ550FS .308 for shooting steel plates beyond 400 yards, but nothing living. Last but not least is the .416 Barrett. The lead leaves the barrel at greater than 3000fps. That's with a 450 grain bullet. You'll have to have deep pockets, but it is a hot round that is capable of passing the 1,000 yard mark and then some.

308 is a great round and by far my favorite

its gives you a majority of what 3006 brings to the table , but its a little less distance and in a smaller sized cartridge

for range, price, and damage its a pretty well respected caliber

also if you are planning on distance shoots id recommend a good glass for best accuracy

leopold are always my first choice in top glass

but i have a few other variants i work with that are fine

-nikko sterling
-redfeild
-barska -may be cheap but works
