Discovery Channel's LAPD--Comments

Hey Will, LAPD allows officers to carry their own Smith and Wesson 4506's & 4516's while on duty. The department still issues every officer coming through the academy with a Beretta 92FS.

Although I have heard from a reliable source that the LAPD is looking into issuing a .40 cal. pistol department wide. The only units that will be able to keep their .45's will be SWAT and Metro.

I guess that with 30,000 some officers one can expect to find all types in LAPD, from serious and professional officers to those that just barely made the cut. The SWAT and Metro folks are the top of the line. Do they still carry 1911? I wonder if LAPD will be hampered by HUD's illegal action and have to award their contract to S&W?

Pete80:

Good for the LAPD! Nothing against the 9mm, I shoot this caliber better than any other and feel well protected by it but the .45ACP provides me with a warm, fuzzy feeling.

The bottom line IMHO is that it is great that those guys in the LAPD have an option.

FYI
Even if an officer fails to qualify they are allowed to go back to duty. But if, at the end of the month, they have not completed their monthly qualification (with a qualifying score), a personnel complaint is initiated and the officer is disciplined (possibly with a suspension). Can you say vicarious liability? And everyone wonders why the City of LA is always getting sued.

Note: This does not apply to Captains and above as they are exempt from any discipline.

Also, although the current LAPD issued gun is the Beretta 92, look for the city and the Chief to insist that this be changed to S&W autos, even though the Smith's have had a very bad reputation for jamming. This would be in support of S&W's bowing down to the Feds.

Could it be true that the Feds are POSSIBLY giving certain cities $$$ to buy S&W's?

ARShooter:

The beauty of this S&W deal is that the more the marxists push the wworse it gets. Hopefully these socialists will be out of office in January of 2001 and this will be over.

I just cannot believe that Congress is is allowing this coercion to happen. If this is what we have with a Republican-controlled Congress, we are in trouble if they lose the majority!

I am just glad that John Q. Public is teeling S&W to take a hike.

I don't think the firing pin was broken because she did end up shooting a bit.

Her gun was filthy. If I were her partner I would be infuriated. The thing is, she walked off in uniform with her gun, and I am not sure she didn't go on her shift with her gun like that!

Here is how I saw her qual shoot go:
She drew her gun but forgot to chamber a round and tried to fire it. "Click". Then she racked the slide to get a round in the chamber. "Click". Oops, forgot to take the safety off. Then when she rememberd how to operate the gun and got the safety off, it jammed repeatedly.

Getting a Beretta 92 to jam is rather difficult, I am told.
She said she had "not cleaned it in over six months".

I also saw that LAPD cop-chick on the show "Blind Date". She was just as airheady on that show. She likes attention and does not take her job seriously.

She spent a LOT of time on the LAPD video putting her makup on and getting it "just right", as well as hitting on guys, playing and flirting. She should not be on the beat with lives depending on her.

I've never had anything but good lcuk with SW's Third Gen autos. True, they must be kept clean and well lubed.

If LAPD does go with SW because of HUD's illegal tactics you can be darn sure they'll get sued. I doubt that SIG Arms, Beretta and Glock will just roll over on a multi-million dollar contract.

First, just a minor correction: LAPD doesn't have 30,000 officers. Somewhere around 8,000, give or take. Los Angeles Sheriff's Dept., has around 8,000, give or take, and approx 900 sworn Reserves.

Unfortunately, many cops know almost nothing about firearms, and couldn't care less, other than to qualifiy so they can still get a paycheck and pension. Those officers have two mindsets. 1. "Ahhh, sh!t, it'll never happen to me." 2. "Ahhh, sh!t, if it does happen, I'll just whip out the ol' cannon and cap the m.f.s in a New York minute."

With the politics that's been played in the past 20 or so years, with LE agencies,Federal, State and local, the new motto for recruitment is... "If you can't meet our standards, we'll lower 'em!"

It's only going to get worse. J.B.
