Disaster Strikes (no this is not a Zombie or WROL post

Let's say you had to do it all over again (after a bad divorce, unemployment, natural disaster) and rebuild your collection. What would be your priorities?(CC, home defense, hunting...) What is the maximum percentage of claim/income would you dedicate to replacing your guns? And how much time do you think it would take to replace them all, if you could?

My first gun would be a 12ga Shot gun because you can use it for hunting and for home defense... can shoot any thing from birds to big game.

I would next get a CCW that I could use for self defense and home defense (Probably a J-frame in 357 magnum)

My next gun would be a 22LR for small game and target practice

My number 4 gun would be a Lever action 45/70 for big game

then I would get a 357 magnum rifle.... after that I think I have all my basics covered.

357. MAG, revolver is the best starting place to rebuild a collection. I put $10.00 a pay away for my gun fund. That gives me $520.00 to buy a firearm of my choice each year. You can buy a RELIABLE AND QUALITY built for that amount easily.

@ DejaVu - I agree on the 12 GA shotgun, though I might place it second after a CCW. You must be back East, 45-70 is a great big game woods gun, though I did have a Marlin GG and a Browning 1886... I think I would opt for a 300 Win Mag for Elk and Deer here in the Rockies. Although I really like the .280/ 7mm ballistics. And yes ya gotta have a .22, which is what I am left with at this time.

@ CountZero: I hear ya though I sold my P7 due to the fact it cut me every range session. Still I really like that pistol.

I'd start just like I did the first time. 22 lr, then shotgun, centerfire, mooooooore centerfires, sprinkle pistols of all flavors in and I'm back at it. There's a few I'd skip along the way such as the two ar's I had.
All my guns are insured so if a disaster claims them, the payout would go to replacing the ones that can be replaced (can't buy the sentimental attachment some have). If a divorce took them, I'd kick my own backside for not hiring a better lawyer. Then I'd replace them carefully & methodically.

@ mrt949: Sagacious approach and sustainable as well. Start a gun fund at $50 bucks a month and have $600.00 by years end to make some really great purchases.

Year 1: Mossberg 500 = $280 and Ruger 10/22 = $250
Year 2: Police trade in G-19 = $400
Year 3: Pawn shop J-frame = $350 or NAA Guardian
Year 4: Slightly used Tikka T3 = the whole budget and then some
Year 5: New Glock 21 = $560
Year 6: Glock 20 barrel and mags...

Or I can sell some vacation time and get a head start!

My insurance settlement would allow me to replace most of what was lost, though the order of replacement would be my pistol, wife's pistol, my rifle, her rifle, son's rifle, etc.

@mdd: Well I have to put one AR on my list, but that's gonna blow a budget for sure. May I ask, which AR's would you be avoiding?

Well I think the most important to replace would be one of my carry guns. Next would be the long gun and then a range/night stand gun. I'm just picking three basics I could replace quickly.

1) S&W 637 - $320
2) Mossberg 500 - $275
3) Sig 239 - $700

Quite honestly that's all I really need and if I had to do it all over again.

Total cost - $1,295.00

Rather not start a brand war & derail the thread. They were both good rifles that never did anything wrong at all. AR's just aren't my cup of tea that's all. I sold them and got two more of a particular brand and style of bolt action I love & am happy with my choice. No more, no less. No hatred for ar's either. Just limited $ and I chose to reallocate it into rifles I like better.

Just to add I have had my share of misfortunes .Home breakins twice ,divorce, unemployement ,major health issues, and huricanes. The only firearn that survived is my ruger security six 357 mag.new in 1976.That's all I must have for a collection.. PLUS A FEW MORE ,:D

@ Shadi Khalil: $1,295 sounds like a good post starter! "What three gun combo would you get for $1,500 or less?" Thanks for posting.

@ mdd: Roger that! And no that's not the intention of this thread. However, because of previous experience/familiarity an AR is on my must have list.

Sure...

A defensive handgun (4" GP-100, 686, full-size 1911 etc)
A defensive shotgun (870, M-37, etc) with a 22"-24" barrel that can double as a hunting shotgun. Or the other way around.
A 77-22 or 10-22.
A centerfire rifle (Probably a Remington 700 in '06)

I'd probably be done at that point. That covers a lot of ground.

From scratch ?

-Desert Eagle XIX in .44 magnum with .357 magnum kit
( 11 rounds of .357 magnum, or 9 rounds of .44 magnum keep me happy for home defense/hunting)

-S&W 340PD
( Pocket revolver for up to and including .357 magnum keeps me happy for carry)

Might take me about $3,000 and would like to fill that at one time.

These are actually what I practice with (10/25/50/75 yards) most often out at the range.

My first priority would be a combo cc/hd pistol. I don't really hunt. Plus I have little experience with shotguns. I find them cumbersome and don't enjoy them. So, I don't own one and if I did I wouldn't practice enough to use it for much more than a toy.

My first purchase would be a CZ P01. It holds 14 rounds and is small enough for CC in my opinion. At roughly the size of Glock 19 they are big enough for home use as well. Plus The P01 has passed multiple torture tests by NATO and the Czech national police. The gun is built to last and has a failure rate of one every couple thousand rounds. A great SD foundation.
