Disappointed with S&W 340PD

Sorry I didn't describe the failure better. After the 3rd shot, the trigger is not cocking the internal hammer and the pin is not hitting the shell at all.

I took it in the the shop today and they were amazed. It was certainly broken and they had never seen this failure before.

After some discussions, they agreed to let me exchange it for a different gun. I ended up getting a Kahr PM9 semiauto. It weighs about 16oz versus 12 for the S&W. Not too bad.

You can't trade away a failure possibility. Your experience with that Smith model is rare. Go over to the Kahr forum at Glocktalk and you'll find folks who have had problems with the pistol that you now have.

If your only going to shoot 38+P anyway, it's hard to beat a 637,638 or 642. Proven durability at nearly 1/3 off the price. At 15 oz they are slightly heavier than a 12 oz 3xx gun but significantly lighter than a 23oz all steel.

I have a 340PD as well, and I am amazed at how light the gun is. I like Smith revolvers and their big autos, like the 1006 and 4506. I have two 629s, they are great.

This is the first pistol of theirs I have had a problem with, and I havent had it looked at yet, I am sure it is probably a fluke. Sometimes it locks up and you cannot budge the trigger unless you open the cylinder and close it again.

Weird things that I cant imagine only happen to mine is only with 357, not 38. With Corbon and S&B 357, I have had bullets pull out of the cases and lock up the cylinder because of the recoil. I also have had quite a few shells get stuck in the cylinder and have to be removed with a punch. These two things only happen with 357. I dont think the bullet pull is from limp wristing it either because I shoot alot of 1600+ fps 240gr cartridges out of a 4" 629 and have no problems holding on, so I am not sure why it does that.

The only "3" S&W I have owned is the all steel model 36. I wish they would make that 36 in something other than a "Lady Smith". At only 20 ounces unloaded it is still light enough for all day pocket carry.

ps I know by "3" series you guys are refering to the three digit model #'s I was trying to be ironic.

Well, well, well. A Smith is having problems. All you Smith worshipers take note! I don't mean to pour salt on any wounds here, but I have lost count at the amount of times I have heard people on here say that a Smith is perfect in every way, and that every other manufacturer originates from a completely different "less than perfect" planet in comparison.

I have always felt that Smith's, especially those manufactured within the past 10 years are overated and overpriced.

My suggestion, get the 340PD fixed with the warrenty, then sell it and get a SP101 along with some extra $$$ in your jeans! If you are very particular, take the SP101 and get a nice trigger job done to it, although I have found the action adequate for a snubby carry gun.
