Disadvantages of aluminum casings for non-reloaders?

Has the military service used aluminum cased rounds in their pistols at all? I was in for four years and did not see them used. I wonder why?

Military 9mm ball is usually loaded hotter than off-the-shelf stuff (does Blazer use aluminum for +p?). Not to mention that the procurement contracts probably specify brass.

I too experience sticky extraction with the .44 Spl Blazer load. It wasn't too bad, the extractor star would push the cases out, but I was shooting it out of a Snubby with a short ejector rod. With brass, I could simply turn the gun upside down and give the rod a good rap but I always wound up manually picking the Blazers out. Too bad because I really liked the looks of that 200grn Gold Dot bullet (you probably could've mixed a cocktail in that HP cavity) but the extraction issues kept me from using it as a carry load.

I just ran a case thru my Wilson, TRP and a Ruger P90 and not a single failure of any kind. I just bought another case today. Why give the range the brass when I can give them aluminum.

Police Positive

I traded off my old Police Positive Special. It had one cyl. that the alu cased ammo would get stuck in, a genuine PITA. Works fine with brass case ammo.

The gal I traded it to brought it back to me the other day, I guess she did not beleive me when I told her not to shoot the alu, cased stuff.

I HOPE she believed me about not shooting +P in it. I don't really want to clean all the blood off the gun if she does that!

Aluminum ammo always goes bang, but sometimes it leaves you flash blinded for 5 minutes and burns your hair.

you mean like 20 years ago put a hole in your thumb trying to push them out of a smith and wesson?

Yep. AND break a ball-peen hammer also!:D

Probably can't be defined as a SERIOUS disadvantage, but it's certainly a real phenomenon-- pollution.

No, not like it's going dry up a rain forest or kill off a gaggle of baby eagles or anything, but it's VERY much like that cheap, surplus, lacquered steel-cased chi-com crap 7.62x39, 9mm and Makarov ammo that is absolutely scattered from hell to breakfast on every outdoor range we've ever seen.

Regular old brass gets picked up by the end of every day, or before lunch time the next day.

If you police your own brass, or shoot indoors and the range nazi's steal all of it, obviously not much of an issue.

I tell you what though... it keeps me laying awake at night knowing that you scatter 10mm brass all over the place... even worse if you switch to that cheap old Blazer stuff! I would love to get a hold of all the once-fired 10 brass that you shuck out of your DW and G29.

I've never had a problem with it that I can recall. I've fired thousands of rounds of it in .38 Spl., .357, .44 Spl. and .45acp.

Pick up a box or two and try it for yourself. More interesting and informative than a poll.
