"Dirty" gun?

I bought a gun off a buddy recently and I'm starting to think it may be stolen.

What do I do with it?

Return it to your buddy and get your money back.
or.....

If you want to lose your buddy and start a xxxx storm, contact the police and have them run the guns serial number.

Just be aware.as soon as you do that you may have to go to court for the state not only to tell where and who you got the gun from but also to prove that you did not steal it.

By the way,he is not much of a friend if you think he sold you a hot handgun.

If it is hot,you have just recieved stolen property.

Time to stop hanging around this guy.

His bad habits will cost you money and his bad habits might just cost you your freedom and a criminal record that will stop you from getting jobs in the future in certain places.

I always ask the seller if I can run the numbers before we seal the deal. Make him aware that the police will want to know where to find this gun if it is hot. If he has any problem with this, the deal is off. jd

I never thought of doing that (of course I have never bought privately either). Will the police run a number for you prior to purchasing if you call and ask? I figured they would make you bring it in or something.

Just like a hot car, hot anything, if you can't get your money back from him, and it is hot, you are basically (]\\\\\\\\\> 'd! Even if you turn it in you got nuthin except the headaches of explaining it or going to testify like they said. It is like your buddy handed you a bag of stolen money from the bank till the heat is off or something. Not a buddy.

Call your local police department and have them run the serial number, he's not a buddy if he sold you a stolen gun and he deserves to get fried.

chris, do they still have payphones any more? Every time I see one now, it is out of order...

I agree though, have the cops run the numbers.

Did you get a bill of sale? That is the one thing I like about our FOID cards in IL; on the back, they tell us how to legally transfer a gun. I've got bill of sales for all my guns that were bought or sold privately.

Why do you think it might be stolen? Weren't you leery before if you feel that way now? Ask yourself, is this guy a GOOD friend or just someone I know? Also, do any serial numbers look to be tampered with. I'd first go back to the guy and tell him I want my money back. If he refuses, I'd go to the police and tell him everything I knew about the guy, address, phone etc. Show them the gun. Maybe everything is fine, maybe not. You sure don't want to get caught holding a stolen gun of any kind. You may end up losing your gun and money, but it's better than losing your freedom. If you do lose either the gun or money, [it may be hard to take] chalk it up to experience learned and be glad you won't have to keep looking over your shoulder.

The local police here will run a serial number for you, but..... you have to bring it in before they will do so. The best way here then, is to go with your buddy while HE has the serial ran.

write down the serial number. tell your friend you want your money back. if he says no then tell him you're going to the cops and you're going to tell them where you got the gun and to expect a visit. if he finally gives you a refund then it's probably a hot gun and you should report it to the police.

worst case scenario, your out some money and a bit of time should you need to go to court.

Got a cool story for ya. I'll keep it short.
Back in the 80s a friend had his rig broken into in a bar parking lot, and lost a brand new Rem 700, 7mm mag. He reported, and insurance got him a new one.
Fast forward about 10 years, to the 90s. A different friend talks to a guy he knew -in a bar- who has some guns for sale. Gets the numbers from a couple he's interested in, and calls them in.
The cops freak out, the sellers name is given and several guns are confiscated. Friend #1 gets a call from the cops and gets to reclaim the rifle that was stolen over 10 years earlier. He now has two of em.
I don't recall what all happened to the seller. jd

That's awesome!

I'm still hoping that I get my Walther P99 .40 back one day... That guy (juvenile) went to bootcamp for 6 months, where he got into a fight and then went to real prison for 3 years. I got one magazine back and that's it, they never found the gun.

In some respects it depends a lot on why you think it could be stolen.

Many police departments will do the check for you, but if it is found to be stolen they are going to take it from you.

You have to wonder why this information is not readily available to the public. It would probably put a halt to a lot of sales of hot guns.

I think he has some kind of obligation to contact the insurance company, doesn't he? Because the insurance company should likely have rights to the stolen one since they paid out on it.

Most police departments have some sort of no questions asked gun turn in buy back policy. Find one near you that does and turn it in that way. They will run the numbers and get it back to the rightful owners.

Of course you get nothing for it.

I agree this "friend" has taing a chance at getting you into a lot of trouble. I wouldn't worry too much about what happens to him.
