dilemma on my J-frame

Deja vu

as some of you may know my CCW is a S&W 640. It is an earlier model that is pre-safety lock and I believe it was the first 640 able to shoot the 357 magnum in addition to the 38 special. I have put a set of the Crimson trace 405 grips on it.

my wife ccw a sig p238. She has always liked autos better than revolvers.

last Saturday my wife plans out a fancy date. At the end of this surprise date she pops this question on me. She asked me if she can have my 640 for her carry gun. At first I thought it would be too heavy so I said I would let her carry it for a few days to see if she likes it. Well she has had it for almost a week now and she is in love with it.

My question is this. Do I let her have it and buy my self a newer model or do I keep it and let her pick out a newer model? From what I hear the triggers are not as good as they once where so I worry she will not like it as much as mine that is very broke in.

any advise?

Which do you value more... your wife or your heater

Honestly, if you plan on getting the same type of gun ask yourself this question.

If the trigger is not so good, who would be better with it? You or your wife.

Second question. If the trigger is not so good, will I send it off to a gunsmith for work?

That is about the only advice I can give you.

Personally, if it were me, I would give her the one she likes.

If momma ain't happy, then noboby's happy...

Agree with the above. Especially if you are the better shooter of the two, it will be easier for you to find a workable replacement than for her to find one.

Trade with your wife. Let her carry the 640 in her purse, and you carry the 238. It's a bit flatter, and might be a big more comfortable under dress clothes.

Wife gets the tried and true gun she loves, husband gets an excuse to buy something new, break it in, and fall in love with a brand new gun. Wife cannot get mad about the purchase as the instigator.

This is what we call a win-win.

Bud's has no-lock 642s for under $400...

Keep the wife happy. This is your chance to buy a new gun.

If it gets your wife carrying--give it to her. But, you should give it to her on the condition that she attends a two to four day defensive handgun course with it.

+1, At this point saying no is just going to open a can of worms

Personally I like the older 640's in .38 before they switched over to .357, they got a shorter frame, cylinder, and barrel. They are actually marginally smaller than even the airweight 642's. I got mine for $300 used, you could pick up one of those and still be under budget for what you payed for your 640, aka get yourself 2 guns:D If she expects you to give her not just one of your carry guns, but your EDC than might as well go all out and splurge.

That's a no-brainer. My wife did the same thing with a pristine nickeled Model 38 I brought home. She even asked me to take off the Herrett's grips that fit my hand so well and find a set of rubber grips that would fit her hand more perfectly.

It's a small price to pay, even though that is one beautiful Model 38.
