Did I wimp out or what?

It takes a bigger man to admit their limitations, you absolutely did not wimp out. I sold my .357 J frame because it was downright unpleasant to shoot and not something I wanted in a carry gun, if that makes me a wimp, then so be it.

I shot one before and was actually surprised at how manageable it was given its' obnoxious size/caliber. A random guy at the range asked if I wanted to shoot a magazine through it, and I took him up on the offer. First shot I had a death grip on it because I didn't want it to "fly" out of my hands, but the weight certainly helps. Not something I'd like to shoot for hours on end, but it is probably one of the best BBQ guns around.

And you're not a wimp because of this... Different strokes for different folks.

WC145. Accidents and a lot of near accidents happen when one person gives a high powered gun to another to see their reaction. I sincerely hope that no one here would ever give a gun to someone that even "might" not be ready for it. No offense. I just thought I needed to say this after watching SOOOO many near disasters that pass for funny on Youtube
.
No kidding? Wow. Thanks, Mom, don't get your panties in a wad. I was just kidding, though I didn't think I'd have to actually say it.

And for all you kids reading this - wear your bike helmet all the time, don't drink from a garden hose, fire is hot, smoking is bad for you, Call of Duty and Walking Dead aren't real, and if someone hands you their beer and says "Watch this" you should step back and give them plenty of room.

Guess you didn't catch the "No offense" part. If things like this weren't so common in the real world I would have gladly let it pass as the humor it was intended to be.

Did you "wimp out," OP? I don't think so. Unless there's really no other option, I see no reason to shoot guns that beat me up.

No such thing. People are built different, and like different things.

Personally I hate desert eagles... I'd rather melt it down and make a nice 1911 out of it.

Yeah, Red Dog, you wimped out and so did all the others who agree with you.

Pshaw!

So what if you injure your wrist, the forearm and your elbow?
Huh? No pain, no gain.

All right, discuss among yourselves. I'm going out to get a whipped cream puff.

I didn't like shooting 50AE either. I normally enjoy shooting fire-breathers, but it was just too sharp of a recoil for my taste. Didn't see the point and sold the gun. I don't think you are a wimp.

I don't see how not doing something stupid makes anyone a wimp.

I shoot magnum autopistols, up through .44 AMP, .44 Magnum and .45 Win Mag. I'll happily argue with the people who say there is no point to them.

I'm sure there is a point to the .50 AE, and other monster magnum handgun rounds. I just don't know what it is...;)

For me, the .454, .460, .480, 500, .50AE (and anything in that class I missed) are past the point of diminishing returns.

If not finishing the magazine (or cylinder) of one of the monster magnums, because you learned what you wanted to learn makes you somehow unmanly, then you need a better definition of what manly is.

I'd say you were considerate not wasting the guy's ammo.

'Wimp out' is a silly judgement. Everyone has comfort and experience levels that differ, and it really doesn't have to be a Mr Manly thing. I found the 50 AE in the big DE auto to be a handful (I'm a small-average guy), but I'd shoot it all day so long as someone else was paying the ridiculous price. I found .44Mag in a lightweight Smith revolver to be quite another matter.

Thing is, folks watching me shoot said the gun was coming up to about 11 oclock as they watched from my left side...there's no mistaking that kind of recoil for my wimpy little 40SW ProSeries Smith with powder puff loads. It's a totally different kind of shooting. I found I popped one, then recovered for 20 seconds or so and gathered my brain matter, then popped another one. 'Rapid' fire is just a silly notion...80% of your time is bringing the weapon back to position, 19% is convincing yourself you only need to get a good sight picture and all will be well, and spend the remaining 1% of your time doing what you do with all other guns you shoot. Dead nuts accurate round in the DE.

"Didn't like it"?. That's totally okay in my book. It shouldn't be like drinking Scotch--it sucks but you feel compelled to enjoy it because everyone says you should. I'd like to see everyone who chooses to shoot leave the range with a massive grin of satisifaction--hopefully, satisfaction that comes from getting hits more often than they did the last time they shot.

I love recoil, and I get a bigger grin the bigger the recoil. It's not a thrill for everyone, and that's okay. I have compensation issues.

It may help to imagine starting out at about 13 years old with a Govt 1911, and having your cousins regularly come over the house with a 12 ga single shot 'pistol'...just for fun. The idea that there was gun you couldn't shoot was just silly...we grew up with no bounds--legal or otherwise.

If it was a .50 Desert Eagle you've gotten further than I would have. I've handled them in stores and determined that there's just no way that huge grip is safe in my smallish hands under recoil.

Not that I mind recoil too much, ripping off a few hot .44 mag rounds occasionally is pretty fun for me, but that DE is just too huge.

Wimp is a stupid and insulting word that nobody should ever use in describing themselves.

did you wimp out? meaningless noise. dumb question.

Did you fire a nasty and obnoxious pistol that you didn't want to shoot again? There you go, you have the answer.

If you happened to be stuck in a two seater car with me on a thousand mile road trip, you might just leave me at a diner with a mob of bikers. Is that wimping out, or did you just tear out a bad tooth and leave it in the biohazard container?

It's not wimping out if you don't want to do something again. Nobody even says that sort of thing except when talking about manly stuff. Who has ever accused you of wimping out if you walked out of swan lake? (dude, it takes real nads to sit through swan lake as presented by dozens of pre-teen girls.) No, it's only wimping out if you do something like refusing to fire that .700 NE.

Don't like the .50 AE? I don't like the 12 gauge. we will both appear to be wimps in the eyes of someone. I have never chugged a pint of jack daniels, either, so I guess I'm a wimp a couple of other ways.

I saw an article a long time ago about a guy reviewing the new, compact S&W in .454 casull, iirc. he had a great time. No eye protection, IMO, he was kind of an idiot.

he said that the recoil was stiff, but manageable. The photos showed a different story. In the high speed frames, he fired, lost grip with his left hand, and nearly bashed it against his forehead. This 400 pound redneck found the pounding he got to be "manageable," but I guess I'd probably say no thanks. not today. I'm just going to go home and pepper spray myself in the face.

He's certainly no wimp.
