Did I wimp out or what?

I was at the local range and the guy next stall was shooting a 50 AE. He offered me a full mag to test drive that monster. I shot about 4 rds and it felt as though it was coming out of my hands. (I can hold a 45acp -14 rd stock comfortably). I made the gun safe and gave it back to him. I'm regretting not emptying the mag because that maybe my only chance to shoot one.
Oh well.

No point in shooting a gun that isn't fun for you to shoot. I don't shoot guns I don't trust or that scare me.

I'm all for being friendly and offering or swapping shots casually at the range, but that guy must have been a high-roller! That ammo is $2-$3 a round if you're buying factory ammo.

I had one for a bit, it was fun for a short while but wasn't anything I needed or wanted to keep.

Na.

If it was out of your comfort zone you did right in returning it. I'd rather get it back early then pick it off the floor after you lost control of it.

Ive traded a 1911 for a cylinder of 500 after I tried it i thought it was more then just a novelty. I could dump that into a mean animal relatively accurately.

Discretion is the better part of valor

Another way of saying that bravado is foolish. You are no fool.

I recall a line from a move (title I do not recall). Two characters in a blacksmith's shop. One character picked up a horseshoe, then dropped it fast. The other character quipped, "Burned your hand?". The answer: "Nope, it just don't take me long to look at a horseshoe."

You found what you needed to know about the 50 AE. No sense wasting ammo or wrist cartilage past that point.

I assume it was a DE?

That's a heavy gun and it soaks up the recoil pretty well--it's not as bad as some big bore revolvers.

With that said, I've never enjoyed shooting a DE in anything more than 44 mag.

Ain't ever a reason to do a thing because others think you ought to. If something doesn't work for you, call it good and move on. Only you know you.

What brand/model gun was it? I used to have an Auto Mag V .50AE and it was brutal, even with a factory ported barrel. It was impossible to shoot fast because it would twist out of your hands after a few rounds. It was the kind of gun you take to the range and let others shoot to see their reactions.

Well OP I guess I am a wimp as well...:D. I put a few rounds through one and quickly decided that it was nothing but a wow factor gun. My 300 grain .44 magnums are about as exciting as I like to get and that is only for a short time at the range.

WC145. Accidents and a lot of near accidents happen when one person gives a high powered gun to another to see their reaction. I sincerely hope that no one here would ever give a gun to someone that even "might" not be ready for it. No offense. I just thought I needed to say this after watching SOOOO many near disasters that pass for funny on Youtube.

I felt the same exact thing with my friends 50 DE. Smooth, large grip, no good for me. The actual recoil didn't cause any pain, just felt insecure, now the SRH 454 he replaced the Desert Eagle was another story! That thing feels like some one smacking you in the palm of your hand with an axe handle. The 50 also destroyed the rim on about 40% of the fired cases.:(

I didn't find the recoil bad on the one I shot, but I wasn't a fan of the pistol. Its a toy you own just because you can, and it is an interesting design and all... just not for me.

"A man's GOT to know his limitations."

No lesser a personage than Harry "Dirty Harry" Callahan said that in Magnum Force.

I, for one, see no reason to beat my hands up, they're very useful for a variety of things.

I've mentioned this before that I shot a Ruger LCR with 158 grain .357 magnum rounds and freely admit I will not do that again unless it's something serious like someone's life being in danger.

Dude.......I don't even like shooting my brothers 40sw shield, let alone some magnum stuff.

Calibers with fancy names will mess you up. lol

"Action express" yeah you bet!!!:D

No kidding? Wow. Thanks, Mom, don't get your panties in a wad. I was just kidding, though I didn't think I'd have to actually say it.

And for all you kids reading this - wear your bike helmet all the time, don't drink from a garden hose, fire is hot, smoking is bad for you, Call of Duty and Walking Dead aren't real, and if someone hands you their beer and says "Watch this" you should step back and give them plenty of room.

Not what I expected.

I posted this with hesitation. I thought with men who shoot a lot of different calibers and guns I would get ragged pretty hard. To my surprise most have been supportive and shared their own 'wimp' moments. :D

I don't remember if I hit the target once with that monster. However I do recall how my 1911 and 9mm didn't have any recoil. I must say I shot those pretty well. LOL!!!!

An inexperienced shooter (as in experience with the big thumpers) should never be handed a heavy caliber firearm with more than one round loaded. The out of control recoil could induce a bumpfire which could prove disastrous.

It's not the bumpfire that's the problem. It's the panic that forces the shooter to clench their fist to "catch" a wildly recoiling pistol, thus pulling the trigger a second time with the muzzle pointed no where near the target. ie: under your chin.
