Did I done Blowed Up my FAL?

I think I'm on to something here. I tried screwing it all the way on and then backing off. It looks like its completely closed when its on 2 now. If I do a full rotation counter-clockwise it is completely closed at 1. I guess I should settle for the latter setting and see where it takes me.

¿¿¿ Soda Pop......Is there a semi circular wire ring on yours in a groove just behind the gas adjust ring ? That ring on both of mine keeps the adjust ring from rotating much past max number. With ring off you can screw it till it falls off.

Glad you didn't loose your cross pin......never did find the one I lost.

Soda - Any bad reports on 72, 73, and 74? Mine are all headstamped with those years. Oddly enough, no 75.

You definitely found your trouble. My Century L1 does that. I messed it up when I first got it after I re-assembled it, after the "what makes this thing tick?"-disassembly. I also put my gas plug in upside-down.

I don't know about the DSA's, but my Century runs fine at 6-7, usually 7. I guess if I were in a SHTF situation, I'd set it to 5 or 6 to be absolutely sure.

Turk - no, the gas system isn't very sensitive at all. It's just a mystery sometimes. When I first got my FAL I couldn't figure it out. Once I figured it out, I realized it's pretty simple. Makes the gun very reliable. You find your correct gas setting and you'll end up 'tweaking' it like we do, depending on the ammo.
Actually, the military manual says for armorer to set the gas, and the soldier shouldn't touch it. I wonder why? ;)

Soda, I have an inch pattern and you can open up the regulator all the way and stick a pipe cleaner all the way through, into the bore. I don't know if this can be done on a metric since the port is not angled, but you coul bend a kink at the end of a pipe cleaner, stick it through the bore and wiggle it up through the port.

 PIPE CLEANERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I have an Uncle that smokes a pipe;) . I just got back from my Gunsmith and the gun Passed inspection. I'm going back to the range saturday or sunday and I'm gonna fool with that Collar. That has to be the problem. I'll let you all know if I'm right.

Range Report

The collar was part of the reason. I did not have to adjust the gas setting as low as I did before. The ammo I'm shooting (South African) is very accurate but might be a little weak. I know its weaker than the Chilean I originally shot. The only other thing I noticed this time at the range was........

The brass did not eject in the same direction all the time. I know My scope mount takes a beating because its got brass markings all over the side of the mount. Do you think this is just because I have the DSA scope mount on my FAL?

Follow up

I got a hold of some Pipe Cleaners and I picked up 200rds of Hirtenburger today. My FAL still only Functions 100% when the Gas setting is between 3 and 4.

I've done absolutely everything. The Hirtenberger kicked a little more than the SA but it wasn't any more accurate.

Should I accept this?

A few more things you may want to check.

Blow-by: (1) Undersized or worn gas piston. DSA sells new pistons. They are metric, but will work in an inch pattern rifle.

(2) Worn gas plug.

(3) Loose gas tube. Remove gas plug and piston. Does gas tube wobble excessively? Remove gas tube pin. Screw in gas tube to see if it will bottom out. Tube should be bottomed in gas block, then turned back out just enough to insert gas tube pin. Next, remove gas tube completely and inspect the threads. If they look worn or stripped, replace the gas tube. If the threads look good, check the threads in the gas block. If they are worn or stripped it's time to find an experienced FAL smith to install a new gas block.

:(

It might not be a bad idea to polish the chamber while you're at it.

A lot of FAL nuts say that the gas system should NOT be lubed to help reduce fouling. The plug, block and tube are chromed. HTH
