Did I buy a disgrace?

If the gun is fundamentally sound, $350 is okay. I'm with Jim March about leaving a gun in a truck all the time. Sometimes, it's necessary to leave one if you can't take it into your place of work or wherever. Take it in at night, though.

My only disagreement with Jim is I'd go with 158 gr SWCHP +Ps in 38 special. These are proven killers and easy on the gun.

If you must use 357 mags, I would still go with 158 gr. Either semi jacketed hollow point or soft points for woods walking or as a backup to your hunting gun. The 125 gr has the reputation, but the 158 works just as well and are less likely to damage the forcing cone on the barrel.

Truck is in the garage at home. I can see my truck all day while at work it's parked outside my window in front of my desk 10 feet away. So the risk is rather low. Yeah it could happen that's why I don't want to leave a really expensive gun in the truck. But I think the chances are low. If I was livingin in a high crime area in an apartment complex and my vehicle was out of sight all day at work I wouldn't do it.

Yup. They're great. BUT not in a 13oz class gun, which is likely what he has (LCP38). Too much risk of the bullets yanking under recoil.

The Speer 135+Ps are only slightly behind the best plain lead 158+Ps and won't yank under recoil even in the rather silly S&W 10oz critter.

Looks good to me. Ok, not like a shiny blue one, but to me its got a real functional type appeal to it. I think you did good.

I picked up a 4" 19-3 for 180 bucks several months ago.

It was so cheap because there was terrible wear on the sideplate, along with some pitting. I almost passed over, but I noticed the screws were completely pristine - lockup was tight and solid. This was a police trade in that was clearly carried a bunch but shot hardly at all. Took her home, cleaned her up, and now I have an amazing K-frame beater gun for when I'm up at my north 40 acres.

Great looking wheel gun. For $350, and a Smith at that, you've got nothing to be ashamed of at all. Shoot it; take care of it; it will last you a lifetime.

Picked up my first revolver yesterday. It's a smith and wesson 19-3 with 2.5 inch barrel.

Ohhhhh.

It has been duracoated od green.

Aaaach!

I thought it looked good when I bought it but the more I look at pics of others with a deep bluing I wish I could've found one of those. I shot it today and loved it. Really like the feeL in the hands and balance over the rugers the rest of my family swears by. I think I got a deal on it at $350 but it sure isn't pretty with the duracoat.

I'm sure somebody will be able to fix it for you.

---edit to add---

OK, I read through the thread far enough to see the pics.

The green doesn't come through in the pics. The Duracoat doesn't look that bad to me. IMHO, use it that way, until it chips or wears or you're tired of it.

I like it!
Model 19's with the round butt and 2.75" barrel are getting very expensive...you got a great, desirable revolver in shooter guise for a great price...which is how I feel about mine.

That's not ugly. THIS is ugly...

As long as gun owners do not work hard to prevent guns from being stolen, we will have vociferous opponents who want to pass further legislation against legal firearms owners.

If you let a gun get stolen that easily, you've screwed up.

I am in complete agreement with the above sentiments.

In addition, I have nothing against plain-looking "beater" firearms, but what's wrong with one's iron being a little fancy? Per Suetonius, one way that Julius Caesar motivated his troops was by “....furnishing them with arms inlaid with silver and gold, both for show and to make them hold the faster to them in battle, through fear of the greatness of the loss.”

Now, all I have to do is get someone like Caesar to furnish me with a slick, custom silver-and-gold-inlaid Model 57, and I'm good to go..... :)

That finish is perfect for hot weather carry. Sweat and humidity can very easily become the bane of blued firearms. I bought a cosmentically challenged albeit mechanically sound S&W Model 36 that I had duracoated for deep carry during the hot summer months. It works great for me.

Dedicated Truck Gun

I have no problem with a dedicated truck gun however it better come in and out when truck is parked at home at night. I have several that tend to ride in the truck with me however I do not like the idea of a firearm out of my control.

When I go inside so do the boomthings that is the rule

jglsprings,

Stop letting your cat lick your gun! :D

sbowling79, think of it as a matte finish to keep the glare down. ;) I like it.
